Job summary

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Respiratory Specialist Nurse to join the Respiratory Nurse Specialist Team to support the management of patients with respiratory conditions. We are looking for an enthusiastic and motivated band 6 Nurse with previous experience in treating patients with acute and chronic respiratory disease.

The successful candidate will be a highly motivated, innovative, compassionate and enthusiastic registered nurse, who strives to deliver person-centred care, supported by excellent clinical knowledge and skills, is able to work autonomously and is confident in their own decision making. The postholder will need to have a qualification in respiratory care or relevant equivalent and significant experience working within the speciality.

The Respiratory Nurse Specialist Team aims to ensure that people with acute and chronic lung disease receive high quality, safe and effective care.

The team is based at University Hospital Coventry & Warwickshire delivering acute inpatient care and specialist outpatient clinics. The postholder will be required to independently travel to alternative trust locations for some clinics.

Main duties of the job

  • To work with adult patients suffering with all respiratory conditions -assisting in developing a seamless service spanning the Acute Trust inpatients and outpatients.
  • Responsible for clinical assessment of a group of patients, ensuring appropriate car is planned, impletements and evaluated, involving patients and service users.
  • To work closely with the Respiratory Nurse Specialist and deputise if needed, Respiratory Physicians, and the multi-disciplinary Respiratory Care Team, providing specialist advice for patients, carers, and staff and helping to develop services across the Trust.
  • To monitor the progress of respiratory patients and evaluate the effects of interventions ensuring their safe management. Improve health status of this patient group
  • To liaise with other health professionals in the GP surgeries towards improving the care of people with a respiratory disorder.
  • Implementation of the COPD and Asthma care bundle and data collection for the ongoing national audits

Job responsibilities

To support/participate and deputise if required in Consultant and Nurse-led clinics working within guidelines agreed by the respiratory care team.

To develop the knowledge and skills to assess, plan, implement and evaluate care for respiratory patients in secondary care and using this understanding to improve the individual patients understanding of their respiratory condition and management. Identify their needs; provide education, monitoring and support.

To act as an advocate for and support the patient and their carers. Be the key worker in coordinating the efforts of the multidisciplinary team.

Be aware of the key therapies available to these patients and be conversant with their usage ensuring patients and professionals have sufficient knowledge to deliver safe and effective care.

Undertake routine specialist assessment including oximetry, spirometry, documenting accordingly and ensuring action when results fall outside the accepted range.

Undertake a holistic assessment of patients needs encompassing physical, emotional, social and spiritual issues, including the needs of their family and carers. Support patients exploring the use of alternative therapies.

Promote health education advice, including; smoking cessation establish ways of raising public awareness of anti-smoking policies.

Support the team in providing an effective telephone advice service for patients, their relatives, general practitioners, nurses and other health care professionals.

To record data that is required to update directors of primary and secondary care on the development of the service.

To support the respiratory team to work within agreed budgetary levels and ensure effective use of resources.

Work with the Senior Respiratory Nurse Specialist to develop professional nursing practice, skills and competencies.

Conduct clinical audits as appropriate to speciality

Be able to communicate effectively with all professionals to provide an effective service.

Ensure that all local and Trust wide policies, procedures and relevant documentation issued by the statutory bodies are adhered to.

Adhere to standards for records, and record keeping.

Assist with the formulation, review and updating of policies within respiratory care.

Assist in the development and implementation of quality monitoring systems and contribute to the development of clinical audit and effectiveness within the Trust.

Ensure that local practice complies with NMC standards and guidelines.
