Job summary

Are you looking to increase your high dependency care skills and knowledge? Would you like the opportunity to work within the acute infant ward and rotate in to the High Dependency area?This is a rare and exciting opportunity to join our committed and evolving HDU Flexi Nurse team, as we are currently working towards being the first independent Level 2 Critical Care accredited High Dependency Unit within the West Midlands outside of the Tertiary Centres.Our Paediatric High Dependency Unit is a 6-8 bedded Unit providing care for critically ill children from birth up to 18 years of age. As per the GIRFT report for Critical Care (2022) we flex our beds to meet demand. We are funded for 6 beds in the summer and 8 beds in the winter. To meet this increased winter demand we have a tried and tested support programme to up skill nurses over the summer months to become confident and competent practitioners with additional skills enabling them to support the core HDU team within the winter months.

Please note this post is not suitable for applicants who are required to undertake the OSCE training programme. Applicants who do not have current valid UK NMC registration will not be considered for this post.

Main duties of the job

As an aspiring Level 2 Critical Care Department we care for some of the most complex illnesses and injuries in the region outside of the tertiary centres. We work closely with specialists from all medical and surgical backgrounds. We have recently been able to take on more complex surgeries with the addition of us being able to provide epidural care, UHCW is renowned as a specialist centre regionally for our Ortho/Plastic Surgical care. Medically we now also have the ability to manage acute and long term CPAP, BiPAP via face mask and Tracheostomy as per the GIRFT recommendation of 'care closer to home'.

As a Unit we offer:

  • An opportunity to enrol in the Trust development programme, with the aim of becoming a senior member of staff.
  • Your educational needs and continued professional development will be supported by our dedicated HDU Practice Educator, our Clinical Band 7 for HDU as well as our Paediatric Resuscitation Practitioner and a dedicated HDU Ward Manager.
  • To prepare you for the role you will be offered in house training:
    • High Dependency course
    • PILS
    • Assessor/supervisor training
    • On the job face to face skills training bespoke to your needs (NGT, central line, tracheostomy, vent training etc)
  • All members of the team will need to complete the BCH Level 1 and 2 Critical Care course within 12 months of commencing the role.
