Who are we and what do we want?

We are seeking an experienced, dynamic and enthusiastic, highly specialised Physiologist/Clinical Scientist to help lead the way, develop and improve our Electrophysiology and Invasive service here at UHCW Trust.

As a Cardiac Investigations department in a tertiary centre, we provide a full range of non-invasive and invasive procedures, and have a 24 / 7 PPCI service that is one of the best in the country. Our Growing electrophysiology service performs over 700 procedures per year including, 3D mapping, Cryo, SVT EPS, and a substantial VT Ablation Service. AT UHCW we are proud to be involved in ongoing research in the field of EP, this allows us early use of new technologies and procedures. Our Catheter Suite provides a full range of diagnostic and theraputic services; PPCI/PCI, TAVI, Right and Left heart Cath, structural closures/repairs, Complex device implantation and extraction (including: MICRA, CSP, S-ICD).

Main duties of the job

We actively support the training of new cardiac physiologists, specialist registrars, and members of the wider multidisciplinary team as well as our own staff, we hold regular MDT meetings for interesting case review or when there is ambiguity, providing further training opportunities. The department encourages and supports research, educational development and attendance and participation at local and national meetings.

This post will offer you the opportunity to work across two prestigious hospitals in Coventry and Rugby which include a breadth of specialities including Stroke, Care of the Elderly, Orthopaedics, an Upper Limb Unit, Neurosciences, Medicine, Surgery, an Outpatient Rehabilitation Unit and Inpatient Rehabilitation.

We anticipate future service developments which will include advanced physiologist led clinics, with a Physiologist Led VT clinic already in operation, alongside a Joint Physiologist and Heart failure Nurse Optimisation clinic.

  • To provide day-to-day management and supervision of the Electrophysiology (EP) team, managing all patient activity whilst ensuring high quality care for diagnostic services.
  • To perform EP Procedures at an independent level, contributing to the service delivery of the full range of cardiography and other cardiology procedures when necessary, ensuring that National standards and guidelines are maintained.
  • To participate in the on-call rota as required.

Main Duties/ Responsibilities

  • To work as a highly specialist practitioner across the range of EP procedures performed in the Department of Cardiac Investigation (DCI) and to provide operational management support to the DCI manager/Chief Clinical Physiologist for the specified area within Cardiac Investigations.
  • To provide highly specialist expertise for clinical practice, ensuring that all procedures and data produced are to the required standard and are documented in accordance with Operational Procedures/national guidelines.
  • To work across all sites as required, managing the workload for your designated clinical area, ensuring effective workforce planning, maximised capacity and robust service delivery.
  • To ensure diagnostic tests are performed in accordance with protocols and diagnostic reports containing a range of complex facts and measurements are accurate and produced in a timely manner.
  • To actively contribute to service developments and expansion, taking part in Capacity and Demand planning and supporting business case developments.
  • To be competent in the documentation of patient data for investigations undertaken within the department, ensuring that all data is accurate and processed in a timely manner and produced in the appropriate report format, ensuring highest levels of concentration and accuracy to complete tasks and interpret results.
  • To provide highly specialist diagnostic reports, prescription for optimisation therapy for pacemaker/device implantation and follow-up, and for accurate data entry and storage of data. To be the lead person for cardiac physiologist led exercise testing ensuring tests are performed and reports are produced in accordance with departmental protocols.
  • To provide clinical supervision and support to Specialist Registrars in Cardiology, trainees and junior staff, perform assessment of competency and ensure tasks are carried out in accordance with departmental procedures and within appropriate time scales.
  • To ensure complex and expensive diagnostic/ therapeutic equipment is used in accordance with health & safety, handling and moving guidelines and equipment malfunction is dealt with in accordance with departmental protocols. To undertake the day-to-day care and maintenance /calibration of all equipment used in the department. Leading on the procurement of additional equipment and maintenance contracts where required.
  • To ensure adequate stock levels of consumables are maintained, to ensure effective utilisation of resources and continual service delivery.
  • To participate in appraisals and personal reviews and work to achieve agreed set objectives, including the required attendance of national and departmental meetings and nationally accredited courses.
  • Undertake further training as required for both professional development and service provision and be actively involved in clinical governance of service and service development.
