Job summary
The unit manages Trauma, Congenital Abnormalities, Head and Neck Surgery limited to block dissection, skin cancer, facial reanimation, Breast Reconstruction and provides an acute and elective hand service as well as dealing with miscellaneous "healing problems". Major burns, cleft lip and palate cases are referred to the Regional Centre at QEHB and Birmingham Children's Hospital respectively.
The Department has close links with Dermatology, Maxillofacial Surgery, Orthodontics, Orthopaedics, General Surgery (particularly Breast Cancer surgery), Paediatrics, Cardiothoracic and Neurosurgery (UHCW), Occupational Therapy (particularly in relation to hand cases), Physiotherapy and Breast Care Nurses.
Main duties of the job
The main duties of the post holder will include:
- Responsibility for assisting in providing plastic surgical services to the Trust
- Examining and clerking in patients prior to both elective and emergency procedures
- Supporting the Consultant led ward round each morning Monday - Friday
- Taking responsibility for inpatient care on the ward alongside the Advanced Clinical Practitioners and Senior Wound Care Nurse
- Completing discharge summaries and request forms for investigation
- Supporting a 1 in 4 SHO level oncall rota
- Active involvement and participation in the clinical audit programme
- Delivery of emergency care in the Hand Assessment Unit
- Supporting the operating teams in theatre and treatment rooms.
Rota
The SHO level rota runs on a rolling 4 week plan and does not include night working. The hours for each day are;
- On Call - 0730 - 2030
- Normal Working Day 0800 - 1700
As the on call you will be expected to respond to the Emergency Department and Ward based escalations. As part of a normal working day we anticipate that following ward rounds you will the opportunity to attend theatres and clinics.

Training
Experience will be provided within theatres and the OPD clinics, where there is ample opportunity to gain experience in a Consultant led environment.
Weekly teaching sessions will take place every Friday morning with Consultant support within the department. Although not a training post, the role will be identical to those of CT1 and CT2 trainees on rotation.
Research
Junior Fellows are actively encouraged to develop and complete a research project during their attachment and to link with the Consultant academic lead within the department. Educational support will be provided separately by an assigned supervisor. There is scope for research to be linked to a postgraduate qualification once in post.
Teaching
The post holder will be required to participate fully in the education and training of medical students, trainee doctors, paramedical, nursing and other appropriate personnel.
General
Whilst in post Junior Fellows will complete the annual appraisal process and work towards revalidation. Completion of all mandatory training required by the Trust goes some way towards ensuring positive appraisal outcomes.
It is expected that post holder will keep up to date with both internal and external continuous professional development. Study Leave can be requested for specific training needs that will provide benefit to your role and progression, which can be raised with your education supervisor and clinical lead.
Attendance of departmental meetings is essential and active involvement is prompted.
Active engagement in developing local and Trust policy in relation to patient care will also be encouraged.
Junior Fellows will complete the majority of clinical activities whilst based at the main UHCW site in Coventry.
