Job summary

The post holder will be responsible for the delivery of quality care to patients under direct supervision of senior staff within the CRM. The post holder will participate in the monitoringand maintenance of standards and effective use ofall available resources with direct supervision whilst ensuring the highest possible standard of evidence based care is provided to couples seeking investigations and treatment.

Main duties of the job

The Centre for Reproductive Medicine are looking for a Fertility Nurse Band 5 to work on a part time basis.

We are looking for a dynamic, focused, strong and flexible Nurse to join the department and help us continually improve and change the unit to meet the needs of the patients that we care for.

Job description

Job responsibilities

Clinical:

  1. To assess, plan, implement and evaluate plans of individualised patient care, working in collaboration with members of the multi-disciplinary team.
  2. To provide pre and post treatment information for couples, written and verbal. Obtaining informed written consent for the couple, after emphasising the complex ethical and emotional issues.
  3. To plan and co-ordinate treatment cycles.
  4. Handling of patients telephone enquiries, regarding advice, support in consultation with senior nurse.
  5. Undertake blood test ordered by medical/senior nursing staff.
  6. To teach patients/ relatives safe and effective injection techniques.
  7. Provide nursing care for patients attending for minor theatre procedures.
  8. Taking rotational responsibility for preparation of theatres, assisting in aseptic procedures and recovery of the patient.
  9. Pregnancy testing and managing the patient when giving results in consultation with senior nurse.
  10. Undertake a comprehensive training programme to become proficient in the use of vaginal ultrasound scanning for the monitoring of follicular development of the ovary, pregnancy assessment up to 8 weeks gestation and pelvic assessment.
  11. With training and supervision by senior nurse/doctor carry out intra-uterine/donor insemination procedures.
  12. Maintain accurate patient record systems recording programmes of treatment/interventions/care to form the basis of total patient care records for in and out patients in compliance with the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority (HFEA) code of practice and in accordance with Trust policies and procedures.
  13. To participate in data collection.
  14. Assist in the development of policies, procedures and protocols for the CRM.

Education and Development:

  1. To keep up to date with the evolving changes within the legal framework of the HFEA.
  2. Optimise opportunities to promote health education to ensure preventative medicine is utilised.
  3. Maintain and develop personal and practical skills based upon appropriate research.
  4. Participate in appropriate training and development activities.
  5. Participate in team, professional and personal development activities and promote a commitment to continuous development and improvement.

Research and Audit:

  1. Contribute to research and development programmes within the department.
  2. Ensure that decision making is based on accurate information, correctly collated and interpreted.
