We are looking for a motivated individual to join the team on a full-time basis. Applicants for the SCP role need to compete a MSc in Surgical Care Practice, robotics training and be an independent prescriber (dependent upon professional regulatory requirements).
The Advanced Clinical Practitioner (ACP) team which include Surgical Care Practitioners (SCP) at UHCW is a well-established team, working in several specialities within general surgery. We are looking for a motivated individual to join the team on a full-time basis. The post is with the colorectal team, who are looking for a SCP with keen interest in robotic surgery.
A high profile, accessible and responsive leader, with managerial and clinical responsibility for the delivery of advanced practice as a Surgical Care Practitioner in general surgery, urology and vascular, theatre, ward and Surgical Assessment Unit.
The applicant must demonstrate experience working within Operating theatres and Surgery, preferably at a senior level. If you endeavour to fulfil that role but do not have the full qualifications and experience, but can demonstrate enthusiasm to learn, we can offer the post as a trainee development opportunity starting at Band 7, progressing to 8a once the training criteria is met. All post holders will be required to work flexibly including early late and night shifts over a 7-day working week.
Main duties of the job
Working as part of a general surgical team, the post holder will practice autonomously in the general surgery, to provide initial assessment and ongoing care for elective and non-elective patients. Whilst being accountable and self-directed in line with the relevant code of professional conduct.
Able to make informed decisions within their own specialty and scope of professional practice, involving patients and public to ensure agreed standards, targets and objectives are met.
The post holder will demonstrate clinical assessment, critical thinking in the clinical decision-making process. They will work collaboratively with the general surgical team to meet the needs of patients and will play a key role in service delivery and adherence to policy and procedures. They will also be instrumental in guiding junior medical and nursing staff in relation to relevant protocols and procedures.

The post holder will be required to work within all areas of general surgery, urology and vascular alongside the allocated surgical team or on-call team. This including the theatres, acute surgical assessment unit (SAU), main wards and clinics areas, undertaking primary and secondary assessments alongside medical colleagues, providing support and guidance to nursing and medical staff in the management of general surgery, urology and vascular patients. The post holder will be required to work flexible shifts covering a 24 hour service to include early, late and night shifts across the week including weekends.
Assess and prioritise elective and non-elective general surgery, urology and vascular patients undergoing treatment
Undertake advanced practitioner-level holistic assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of patients care needs pre, intra and postoperatively
Undertake initial assessment to determine differential diagnoses, utilising advanced critical-thinking and decision-making skills, deciding when necessary to refer to senior medical colleagues
On a daily basis, act autonomously to provide expert clinical/technical care, which contributes to the diagnosis, specialist care and treatment plans for these highly complex patients
In the absence of medical staff and within predetermined parameters, using advanced clinical-reasoning skills the post holder will initiate treatment plans and support to ensure the ongoing safety of the patient
Demonstrate continual evaluation of practice within the defined specialist area and take responsibility for making agreed changes where appropriate
Proactively initiate treatment plans for patients requiring urgent intervention including fluid resuscitation, oxygen therapy, antibiotics or other urgent treatment
Undertake procedures such as cannulation, venepuncture, arterial blood gases to facilitate efficient urgent care in the context of acute illness or sudden deterioration
Initiate relevant investigations such as X-ray, Ultrasound, ECG and blood tests to enable timely diagnosis and facilitate early decision making, interpreting and reporting findings to appropriate clinicians within scope of practice and following UHCW protocols and guidance.
Prescribe and review medication, appropriate to patient needs in the context of acute illness, taking into account any treatment given previously for pre-existing medical conditions, providing information and advice to patients on prescribed medication regimens, side-effects and interactions, within agreed prescribing formulary.
Discuss and agree assessment outcomes with patients, carers and other healthcare professionals, to enable them to make informed decisions regarding treatment
Authorise the decision to admit patients and/or proactively initiate discharge
Ensure that accurate, essential and appropriate written and verbal information is relayed to staff, ensuring adequate facilities are in place to maintain safety in the environment, ensuring effective management of this group of patients
Ensure that patients are referred to appropriate practitioner when needs and risks are not within own scope of practice
Ensure dignity, privacy, and cultural and religious beliefs are respected at all times
Co-ordinate the care of acute general surgery, urology and vascular patients throughout the care pathway with the multidisciplinary team and clinical services to ensure the effective management of this group of patients.
