Job summary

A rare and exciting opportunity has arisen within the Respiratory and Sleep Sciences Department for a Clinical Scientist/Deputy Service Lead. The Department of Respiratory and Sleep Sciences is a UKAS accredited Physiology Department offering a comprehensive respiratory and sleep diagnostic and therapeutic service. Due to progression within the team a vacancy has recently become available.

You would be expected to take responsibility for specialist services within the department which may include but not be limited to CPET, Occupational Asthma, CPAP and NIV. You will be responsible for the direct line management of a multidisciplinary team that includes Clinical Scientists, Clinical Physiologists, Nurses and Physiotherapists. There is an expectation that you will undertake research and disseminated findings at local and national level.

You will be self-motivated and have excellent interpersonal skills. You will have the ability to work under pressure, autonomously and prioritise your individual workload, as well as be able to work effectively within a team and support development of staff and students. You must be able to provide evidence of continuing professional development and have experience in a wide range of diagnostic respiratory and sleep investigations.

You must possess a relevant master's level degree and professional qualifications and experience of leading designated services. You should also be registered with either the HCPC or ACHS.

Main duties of the job

1. To support the Consultant Clinical Scientist/Clinical Service Lead in the delivery and development of a comprehensive Respiratory and Sleep Sciences Department offering a wide range of routine and complex diagnostic tests and treatments.

2. Act as deputy to the Clinical Service Lead to oversee the quality of service, make decisions and implement policies as required.

3. Act as the lead Clinical Scientist for specialist services within the department.

4. To perform local, regional and national research and audits and implement their findings

Main responsibilities:

Clinical

  • Analyse, interpret and report on the results of a range of investigations
  • To be proficient at performing respiratory and sleep physiology tests independently to standards
  • Attend and participate in local and national meetings related to Respiratory and Sleep Sciences
  • Identify the diagnostic and therapeutic requirements of specialist clinical departments and clinical colleagues, this may require attending multidisciplinary team meetings
  • To interpret complex data to ascertain and identify any pathological or incidental findings observable. Consider and report diagnoses as appropriate
  • To communicate test results, technical information, and exchange specialist information with colleagues from your own and other disciplines
  • Interpret emerging evidence that underpins diagnostic services and their clinical interpretation
  • Support diagnostic and therapeutic services to ensure delivery of efficient and accurate results to enable the most effective treatment to be provided

Scientific

  • To be responsible for the safe use of complex and expensive equipment e.g. Pulmonary Function, CPET and NIV equipment
  • To assess and adapt clinical techniques following assessment for each procedure to meet the individual needs of the patient
  • To be responsible for quality assurance of the routine and specialised tests within the department, including external assessment, internal monitoring and taking corrective action where the need is identified
  • To disseminate highly complex scientific knowledge, gained through private study and research and development projects, by peer reviewed publications and presenting to large groups at local and national meetings.
  • To initiate, participate in and supervise local and national research projects and audits within the department, to achieve improved clinical governance
  • To possess the I.T. skills required for:
    • Microsoft Office for report writing, audit and data management and presentations e.g. word-processing, spreadsheets development, PowerPoint
  • Statistical packages for analysing scientific and clinical data, e.g. SPSS, Stata
  • Laboratory computer system for entering, retrieving, and validating results
  • Online databases for literature searches.
