We are looking to appoint a Consultant Thoracic Surgeon to our ambitious Cardiothoracic Department.
Applicants should be fellowship trained and with experience of Uniportal VATS surgery, along with being on the specialist rota. The successful candidate will join the Thoracic On Call Rota in a busy Major Trauma Centre, providing both planned and unplanned care. The post holder will take an active role in the delivery of care across the UHCW footprint, including outpatients, internal and external MDTs.
The post is available with an immediate start date.
Main duties of the job
The successful candidate will be a full time Thoracic Consultant Surgeon. The Cardiothoracic department is based on the University Hospitals Coventry site, but does provide outreach clinics to South Warwickshire NHS Trust on a hub and spoke model, whilst also support the local area with MDTs, these are predominantly virtual, however travel maybe required.
This post holder, in collaboration with clinical colleagues, will provide a comprehensive adult Thoracic Surgical service for Coventry, Warwickshire.
The post holder will participate in the Thoracic Surgery on call rota. They will also contribute to the general work of the department including a strong teaching commitment, clinical management, QIPS and effective team working.

As part of our commitment to patients and delivery of a world class service for all we have created the UHCW Improvement (UHCWi) System in partnership with the Virginia Mason Institute in Seattle; this involves a structured approach to removing waste and putting the patient first using a lean management system and methodologies. Our culture and ways of working reflect and embed the practices and methodologies of UHCWi. You are expected, where identified, to attend and complete relevant training and development opportunities to support this. This may include Lean for Leaders, Advanced Lean Training, and the Human Factors Programme, amongst others. Full attendance and completion of identified courses is considered essential and a pre requisite for this post.
- Together with clinical colleagues provide acute and elective adult thoracic surgical services to patients in Coventry, Warwickshire.
- Take ongoing responsibility for patients under their care.
- Provide a consultation service and advisory service to clinical colleagues in specialities within the Trust, including neighbouring Trusts.
- To participate in multidisciplinary team meetings regarding the management of thoracic health problems.
- Participate in the development of clinical pathways, treatment protocols and guidelines in the management of these conditions.
- Participate in the teaching and supervision of trainees in cardiothoracic surgery, Trust Grades, and medical students.
- Develop and maintain collaborative relationships with medical colleagues in other specialities and participate in regular clinical meetings and other postgraduate activities.
- Develop and maintain collaborative relationships with your surgical colleagues and the extended surgical team
- Participate in the thoracic on-call rota with Consultant colleagues to ensure appropriate emergency thoracic services are provided out of normal working hours.
- Share responsibility for the professional supervision and development of trainee doctors within the speciality, particularly in thoracic surgery. This will include the appraisal of SHOs, SpRs and Trust Grades.
- Develop and maintain good communications with General Practitioners, Respiratory Medicine Teams and appropriate external agencies.
- Demonstrate a commitment to and participation in clinical governance, risk management and clinical audit. Adopting appropriate systems and practices to ensure continued safe clinical practice and adhering to local guidelines in clinical management. The post holder will participate in the risk management of thoracic surgical patients and in the delivery of effective clinical governance.
- Ensure compliance with the Human Tissue Act (1990), and other policies approved by the Trust.
- Ensure own practice is up to date; this will include taking responsibility for own clinical professional development and participating in the Trusts performance and annual review system.
- Share responsibility for data protection arising out of the use of computers and comply with current legislation.
- Comply with all relevant Trust Policies and Procedures.
- Take responsibility for improving and complying with infection control practices.
- Take responsibility for the compliance with national access targets, including 18 week referral to treatment, 4 hour emergency waits and participate in the delivery of improvement of quality of care agenda and accounts in line with the Darzi report.
