Trainee Pharmacy Technician (Apprenticeship)

Job summary

The Pharmacy Technician role is becoming increasingly sought after and varied as medication becomes more sophisticated and technology evolves. Career opportunities for a Pharmacy Technician post qualification include; medicines management roles, aseptic unit, quality control, training and education, information technology, supplies and procurement, clinical trials, medicines information services, homecare services and operational management besides others.

This is an exciting training opportunity to join the UHCW Pharmacy Department combining on the job training and day release at a chosen training provider in order to achieve the following qualification:

  • Diploma in the principles and practice for Pharmacy Technicians.

The above qualification is achieved over a 2 year period and will enable you to register as a qualified Pharmacy Technician with the General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC). Full training will be provided primarily at UHCW, with some rotations taking place at our St. Cross Rugby site.

This is a 2 year full time fixed term contract working 37.5 hours Monday to Friday including participation in weekend working, bank holiday working, and late nights. Apprenticeship funding rules apply.

Main duties of the job

1. Rotating through different aspects of pharmacy including main dispensary, stores, goods receipt, outpatients, medicines information and ward based services.

2. Take in prescriptions, verifying the patient's identity and the validity of the prescription, clarifying details about the prescription, advising on and validating prescription exemption claims.

3.Counselling patients on their medication, providing them with the correct information enabling them to comply safely with their medication as prescribed and referring to a more senior member of the team when necessary.

4. Dispensing medicines correctly in line with local policies; this may include some hazardous substances, special storage and heavy or bulky items in addition to clinical trials dispensing, according to written or printed prescriptions. Keep complete and accurate records of dispensing.

We are looking to extend our highly reputable pharmacy team through appointing dedicated and enthusiastic individuals to join us on a 2 year fixed term post as Apprentice Pre-Registration Trainee Pharmacy Technicians.

Main Duties/ Responsibilities:

1. Participating in accuracy checking activities of prescribed medicines and products in line with local policies and dealing with errors or near misses appropriately.

2. Receiving medication from a number of suppliers and processing this safely and accurately to assist in the process of supplying medication to patients in a timely manner.

3. Dealing with queries from a variety of healthcare professions and patients, both at the hatch and on the telephone.

4. Undertake any other duties as required by the Director of Pharmacy in accordance with the grade and nature of the post.

Ward services:

1. Supplying stock medication to wards, departments or external organisations.

2. To be responsible for topping up individual ward(s) which includes supplying stock, communicating with the ward staff and assisting with queries regarding the automated medicines cabinets (Omnicell) to maintain appropriate stock levels.

3. To understand the cost implications of over supplying and help to minimise waste through the return or safe disposal of medicine where appropriate.

4. To have involvement in medicines reconciliation which includes completing drug histories, assessing patients own medication and ordering necessary supplies for patients in a timely manner to avoid omitted doses.

5. Incident reporting where processes have not been followed.

Information handling:

1. To be confident and competent with using the pharmacy computer systems such as JAC, TTO tracker and POW+ after training, complying with confidentiality and the data protection act at all times.

2. To have an understanding of and be able to use Word, Excel, internet explorer and email.

Education and training

To attend college 1 day per week working towards the Diploma in the principles and practice for Pharmacy Technicians along with completing functional skills where necessary to enhance or update Maths and English skills.

Other

1. To participate in weekend working, late nights and occasional bank holidays where necessary.

2. Work flexibly across all of the pharmacy departments, covering the work of colleagues during peak periods of absence.

3. Participate in appraisals, personal reviews and work to achieve agreed set objectives.
