University Hospitals Coventry and Warwickshire has one of the largest paediatric units in the West Midlands. We provide general paediatric care to a child population of 65,000 within Coventry and work in partnership with local trusts to provide Neonatal and some subspecialist care to children from Warwickshire and neighbouring counties.
The paediatric department has a designated Children's Emergency Department which sees over 36,000 attendances per year, 3 inpatient paediatric wards consisting of 61 infant and children's beds including a 12-bed adolescent unit, 6 High Dependency beds, 19 infant beds and 24 beds for older children, with over 4,500 admissions per year. The paediatric department also has a designated outpatient department that delivers over 12,000 appointments and a 6 bedded medical day unit facility. The department is in the West Wing of the hospital.
The post holders will join the clinical team and will contribute to the delivery and organisation of the paediatric service. Some paediatric experience at ST1-3 levels is desirable.
Main duties of the job
This job is working at an FY2 - ST3 level within the paediatric department.
You will be part of a 1 in 16-person Full-time rolling rota out of hours shifts including evenings nights and weekends. When working you will either be in the inpatient paediatric department (wards 14, 15, 16) or the Children's Emergency Department.
In the inpatient department you will be responsible for reviewing patients, making initial managing plans liaising with colleagues in the nursing team and with senior colleagues, prescribing medication and intravenous fluids, performing blood tests and lumbar punctures, preparing discharges, etc.
In the Children's Emergency Department, you will be responsible for assessing patients, making management plans, performing basic procedures, and liaising with colleagues to support discharge home or admission to inpatient paediatric department.
You will be expected to discuss cases including any safeguarding concerns with senior colleagues. You will be well supported within the medical team by a full time onsite paediatric registrar. There will also be an on call paediatric consultant on site until 9pm and on call from home after 9pm. (5pm at weekends).

There is a 12-person consultant team leading the department. There are multiple nurse specialists and senior nursing support including advance nurse practitioners in CED. CED is also supported by clinicians from the emergency department.
You will be allocated a consultant to act as an educational supervisor whilst in post.
There are ample educational opportunities including weekly and monthly departmental CPD teaching also twice monthly paediatric/radiology meetings and hospital wide grand rounds.
Departmental training will also include paediatric life support training and certification (PLS) and level 3 child protection training. There will also be opportunities to attend clinics.
You will be expected to be able to demonstrate competencies at an FY2 level or above. You will be expected to have had some experience working in paediatrics. Any RCPCH exams will be an advantage.
