Job summary

UHCW NHS Trust is looking to recruit a full time Consultant Urological Surgeon with a specialist interest in pelvic oncological surgery. UHCW NHS Trust is one of the leading teaching hospitals in the UK and home to Warwick Medical School, providing wide ranging opportunities to contribute to teaching and research. It is housed in a large scale PFI building, providing state of the art facilities for medical care delivery. The trust provides local services to a population of over a million people in the Coventry and Rugby area, and receives tertiary referrals from across Warwickshire, Worcestershire and the wider East and West Midlands. The successful candidate will join a forward-thinking and dynamic team of eight consultants and will actively provide and support the further development of first class Urology services for the Trust, working in collaboration with clinical colleagues in all disciplines to provide an integrated service for patients. The service delivers over 16,500 outpatient appointments (2,500 with procedures) and 3,500 elective admissions per year. The unit is the cancer centre for the Arden Cancer Network and one of 23 Major Trauma Centres in England. It has Da Vinci Xi and X robots and is the Regional Training Centre for LATP prostate biopsies using Precision Point and Koelis platforms and MRI-USS fusion. PSMA PET is provided on site and has an established Lu-177 programme. We are regularly the largest recruiter in multicentre RCTs.

Main duties of the job

This post is designed to recruit a full time consultant (10PA post) to provide a range of services in Urology including participation in a 1 in 9 on call rota covering the University Hospital site (there are no Urology inpatients at Rugby). Cross cover for complex pelvic and cancer surgery is provided within the existing compliment.

It is planned that the new consultant would undertake services for patients with prostate cancer, bladder cancer, and diagnostic urology. The successful applicant would undertake specialised outpatient clinics, SMDT attendance and participate in the on-call rota on an equal basis with consultant colleagues to ensure that appropriate emergency services are provided out-of-normal working hours.

This post supports the proposed increase in robotic radical prostatectomy to 400 cases per year, as well as the growing robotic cystectomy and robotic exenteration service. The Trust is one of the most diverse robotic centres in the country with Head and Neck, Hepatobiliary, Upper GI, Colorectal, Gynaecology and Thoracics. 3 of our surgeons are Intuitive Proctors so most training is achieved in house.

Job description

Job responsibilities

The post holder will work in conjunction with 3 existing Pelvic Cancer Surgeons to provide a sustainable service for provision of Pelvic Urological Cancer. This would involve partaking in the weekly MDT and specialist MDT. The weekly Specialist MDT is run via videolink in conjunction with George Eliot and South Warwickshire Hospitals.

Outpatient Clinics

Each consultant surgeon has a minimum of two weekly outpatient clinics. All clinics have support from dedicated, skilled, technical staff.

Theatre Sessions

The new consultant would have at least two scheduled theatre sessions per week, working in combination with the four existing pelvic surgeons. Surgical mentoring is available from the existing pelvic surgeons, if required.

Continual Professional Development (CPD)

Attention and aspiration to lifelong learning will be supported by the Specialty Group and the Trust to demonstrate safe, effective, knowledge based clinical capabilities.

The post holder will have a reflective approach to their own practice and will agree to a programme of continuing professional development which meets his/her and service provision requirements.

The post holder will complete an annual revalidation ready for appraisal and undertake multisource feedback at least once every five years in order to meet the requirements for revalidation.

Management and Administrative

The successful applicant will undertake administrative duties associated with the care of their patients and the running of clinical areas. This will be assisted with office space and full secretarial support.

They will contribute to the effective leadership and management of the team encouraging constructive feedback from all involved.
