Are you a dietitian passionate about a career in paediatrics?
This is an exciting opportunity for a Dietitian working in paediatrics or with an interest in paediatrics to join an enthusiastic, well-supported and experienced team of 6 Paediatric Dietitians and an Assistant Practitioner. You will be working predominantly in the acute setting seeing patients on the ward or in clinics, but may also be required to carry out home or school visits as necessary.
At band 5 level this is a development post where you will complete a training programme led by experienced and enthusiastic paediatric dietitians, in order to equip you with the skills and knowledge to progress in your career. We are hopeful that there will be a permanent full time opportunity with us at the end of this 6 months fixed term contract. This may be advertised at band 5 or 6 level.
Main duties of the job
- You will provide dietetic care to children as inpatients and outpatients at UHCW, this may include home visits. With appropriate training and on-going support, you will provide specialist dietetic advice on the dietary / nutritional management of infants, children and adolescents with complex needs across a variety of specialities, for example, diabetes, enteral feeding, learning difficulties, behavioural eating problems, eating disorders, allergies, oncology and cystic fibrosis.
- You will have a general rather than a specialist knowledge of Dietetic Interventions
- You will contribute to the training of student dietitians, medical students and other AHPs
- Ideally you will be a car driver with a UK licence and have access to a car for work as the post may require you to visit children at home or school. You must be able to safely carry out manual handling of objects i.e. portable wheelchair/hoist scales.

MAIN DUTIES / RESPONSIBILITIES:
Clinical
- To work autonomously to provide dietetic advice to patients, their carers and staff with a range of medical conditions for patients regardless of setting, within agreed protocols and guidelines and with support from senior colleagues when necessary including:
- Carry out nutritional assessments (interpretation of biochemistry, anthropometrics, clinical condition and diet history) to determine nutritional problem.
- Development of treatment plans (calculation of nutritional requirements, analysis of nutritional intakes sometimes using specialist IT systems, client centred goals and discharge planning including patients on artificial nutritional support)
- Prescription of dietary treatment and ACBS products for conditions where there are limited professional / clinical guidelines available
- To be clinically competent to give dietetic advice, treatment and dietary counselling to patients within the community setting, general wards and out-patient clinics
- To communicate nutrition and dietetic information in an understandable form to staff, clients and carers, requiring negotiation, persuasion, motivation and counselling skills including situations where there are barriers to understanding.
- To work in conjunction with medical, nursing and professional colleagues, attending ward rounds and meetings as necessary to facilitate good communications in providing high quality patient care
- To liaise and advice catering staff when necessary to ensure the appropriate provision of meals for individual patients
- To participate in the health promotion activities of the department.

- To cover the work of colleagues during periods of absence or peak workloads.

9. To participate in the clinical supervision of student dietitians, including planning timetables and undertaking tutorials.
10. To carry out nutrition education & training for nurses, support workers, catering and medical staff as required.

11. To keep up to date with developments in dietetics participating in appropriate training and development activities
12. To actively participate and contribute to departmental clinical supervision group to ensure regular evaluation of practice through peer review.
13. To participate in the preparation and update of dietary information and resources.
14. To support and participate in dietetic staff meetings, sharing knowledge, evaluating and improving service delivery.
15. To participate in the departments Clinical Governance programme including evidence-based practice workshops, clinical audit and reporting of clinical risks.
16. To document patient activity data in accordance with trust and professional standards.
17. To comment on nutrition & dietetic guidelines and procedures and proposes changes to working practice
18. To participate in personal reviews and work to achieve agreed set objectives
19. To work as an autonomous practitioner working within the BDA Code of professional conduct and HCPC Standards of conduct, performance and Ethics and Standards of Proficiency (Dietitians).
20. Contributes to the development and maintenance of the profile of the Dietetic profession.
