Job summary

We have an exciting opportunity to undergo an Apprenticeship in Radiation Engineering at University Hospitals Coventry and Warwickshire NHS trust. The 3-year apprenticeship combines work-based training in the Radiotherapy Physics department at Coventry with fully funded block-release study at the University of West England (UWE).

The apprentice will gain a respected level 6 (B.Sc (Hons)) degree as well as the skills and knowledge to act as a platform for a career in clinical engineering.

Main duties of the job

Radiation Engineering involves the use of a high level of technical expertise to maintain and develop radiation equipment and technology of critical importance in the treatment of cancer. This opportunity will allow the apprentice to develop a range of mechanical and electrical engineering skills by working with a highly experienced team in their work with state of the art cancer treatment equipment.

At UWE the apprentice will learn the scientific basis of engineering and gain a grounding in anatomy and physiology before developing a more advanced and in-depth focus on clinical engineering and the professional aspects of healthcare science with emphasis on Radiation Engineering.

Job description

Job responsibilities

To be considered for this position you will require one of the below qualifications (as of September 2022).

  • A level - a minimum of 112 points (BBC), including two science subjects of which one must be: physics (32 points/Grade C or higher)
  • BTEC National Extended Diploma - Grade DMM, including at least one relevant science subject.
  • Access to Higher Education Diploma - at least 45 credits achieved at level 3 (30 at distinction and 15 at pass or above); 30 level 3 credits must be in science-based units.

Before applying you should consider that you may be required to work outside the hours of 8am to 6pm Mon to Friday on occasion and you will be required to attend training away from home (expenses for travel from Coventry to Bristol will be covered).

A 3 year contract in combination with the degree apprenticeship is offered at Annex U of band 5. The post holder will be paid in accordance with Annex U of the NHS Agenda for Change Terms and Conditions of service i.e. 65% of the pay band maximum depending on the time from completion of training.

A permanent band 5 post within the department is available on successful completion of the Apprenticeship to an acceptable standard.

Main Duties/ Responsibilities

To undertake a structured training programme in Radiation Engineering at level 6, supplemented with in-house training, to develop their skills and expertise relevant to their role in radiotherapy physics and to obtain the required qualifications and professional registration.

To participate in the maintenance service to the highly complex radiotherapy equipment used for treating cancer patients. In particular: linear accelerators, orthovoltage therapy x-ray machines, High Dose Rate after-loading machine and dosimetry equipment.

To develop the knowledge and skill to technically interpret reports from radiographers; and to discuss complex aspects of linear accelerator operation with scientists, technologists and manufacturers engineers with regard to fault diagnosis, equipment maintenance and innovative device development and modification.

Fault diagnosis and repair:

To undertake, under supervision, the diagnosis and repair of faults and breakdowns on the above equipment.

Planned Preventative Maintenance and Quality Control:

To assist with maintenance and safety checking of all equipment to ensure compliance with current safety regulations and manufacturers specifications.

Under supervision to carry out quality control checks on radiotherapy equipment including absolute dose measurements as agreed with radiotherapy physicists.

To ensure that quality control checks which directly result in radiation dose to the patient are carried out with strict reference to procedures and safety tolerance levels set out in the quality system.
