An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Physiotherapist or Occupational Therapist with a wealth of experience in hand therapy to join the large and innovative hand therapy team at University Hospitals Coventry and Warwickshire as a Clinical Specialist Hand Therapist. University Hospitals Coventry and Warwickshire is a major trauma trust.
The hand centre was created, in recognition of the growing national and international consensus that acute hand injuries and chronic hand injuries require a specialist skill set that incorporates the knowledge and experience of both orthopaedic and plastic surgery.
We work alongside six orthopaedic hand consultants and two plastic surgeons with a special interest in soft tissue hand reconstruction. For more information about the service please also visit: https://www.uhcwhand.org/home
You will be working as part of an enthusiastic and experienced team of hand therapists, consisting of a team leader, two Extended scope practitioners, three clinical specialists, three band six hand therapists and a rotational band 5 Occupational therapist.
The role involves specialist assessment and treatment of acute and chronic complex hand injuries and conditions referred from Orthopaedics, plastic surgery, rheumatology and neurology. This post may require some cross site working between Coventry and Rugby to support the needs of the service.
Main duties of the job
1. Provide specialist assessment and treatment of hand therapy outpatients
2. Working closely with consultants in a hand fracture clinic and plastic surgery dressings clinic
3. Assessment and treatment of acute trauma patients in a ward setting to facilitate timely discharge
4. Assist in the development of the hand therapy team through marketing, training, research and other areas of service development
5. Teaching and supervision of junior members of staff
6. To take an active role in supporting and implementing national developments within the service
7. Ensure compliance with best practice and Evidence based guidelines
8. Ongoing Continuing Professional Development

1. Be professionally & legally responsible & accountable for all aspects of own work including the management of patients in own care. Ensure a high standard of clinical care for patients under own management & support more junior staff to do likewise.
2. Interpret & analyse clinical & non clinical facts to form accurate diagnosis & prognosis in on wide range of highly complex conditions to recommend the best course of intervention, evaluate outcomes, reassess & to develop comprehensive rehabilitation plans.
3. Undertake comprehensive assessment of patients including those with complex presentation, investigate & analyse skills & formulate individualised management & treatment plans to formulate specialised programmes of care.
4. Abide by the appropriate professional body and the Health & Care Professions Council standards of proficiency.
5. . Maintain own clinical professional development by keeping abreast of any new trends & developments and incorporate them as necessary into own work.
6. Attend mandatory training as required by Trust policy.
7. Be an active member of the in service training programme by attendance & delivering presentations & training at staff meetings, tutorials, and training sessions.
8. Assist with the implementation of change and evaluation of changes to service provision for the services.
9. Develop excellent relationships with all members of the team and otherappropriate therapy leads to ensure optimal delivery of therapy services.
10. Review and recommend developments for future delivery of the therapy services for patients ensuring the most clinically effective use of resources.
