Are you looking for a new challenge? An opportunity has arisen to be a part of the Pharmacy Governance and Safety team at University Hospitals Coventry and Warwickshire.
This is a specialist post for a dynamic individual to lead on and implement work streams within the role and remit of clinical governance, providing a high quality Pharmacy service to patients. The role will involve leading on and supervising on different projects whilst also enabling assurance mechanisms are adhered to, through audits and quality improvement projects.
Additionally, the pharmacist will have delegated responsibility for Medicines Management. This will be done though providing a cost effective clinical pharmacy service which is patient and drug orientated through effective supply, prescription monitoring and prescribing which ensures the patient receives safe, effective and timely drug therapy. Provide advice and support on all pharmaceutical care issues to the Pharmacy team and to the wider Trust.

Main duties of the job
Work as part of the Pharmacy Governance and Safety team, delivering on key objectives to provide governance support and information on the use and safe handling of medicines within Pharmacy and across the Trust.
The main duties of the role will include working with a range of stakeholders within the department to lead on and implement medication-related projects within the remit of governance; lead and have oversight of audits and quality improvement projects taking place within the department; support with medication shortages and recalls; provide teaching sessions for a range of healthcare professionals from different disciplines and carry out line management duties. In addition, carrying out clinical commitments will also be an aspect of this role.

The post holder will have an overarching role to organise and deliver pharmacy related Clinical Governance leadership:
- Support the maintenance of the Trusts Medicines Policy to ensure all legal and good practice requirements for the Trust and its entire staff are met. Supported by the Governance and Safety Team.
- Support Trust wide compliance with the Medicines Policy through continuous audit and action plans. Supported by the Governance and Safety Team.
- Ensure the Trust is compliant with all its statutory requirements, as directed by the Associate Director of Pharmacy Governance; and the Lead Pharmacist Medicines Safety Officer.
- Convene and lead workshops of senior medical staff for task and finish groups as requested by Trust Medicines Committees or national drivers e.g. national alerts.
- Compile reports for presentation at the Trust Medicines Committees and Pharmacy Senior Management Team meetings around medicines and risk.
- Work with CCG, Medicines Management Advisors to ensure medicine safety across the interface.
- Support the management and recruitment of staff within the Governance team, within the allocated budget for that team.
- Support the MSO and Pharmacy Governance Technicians (skill mix sharing) in investigating all pharmacy dispensing errors, complaints and CAEs. Where appropriate lead on the investigation and report these to the Director of Pharmacy (or Deputy) and action any agreed outcomes. This may include discussing difficult and sensitive issues with patients, colleagues and other Healthcare Professionals.
- Oversee Trust wide communication of any drug supply problems, specific medication risks and drug alerts.
- Maintain the pharmacy risk register ensuring all health and safety, and any other risks are regularly assessed and action plans completed.
- Ensure all statutory audits and reviews for pharmacy are completed and resulting outcomes are appropriately delegated and actioned.
- Compile reports on any aspect of pharmacy and medicines management risk, reporting these through the Trust Medicines Governance structure.
- Actively lead on managing drug recalls and alerts, ensuring all actions are completed within the required time frame.
- Take responsibility for and lead pharmacy Clinical Governance and audit meetings where required.
- Act as a representative for Pharmacy on appropriate Governance committees as requested by the Director or Deputy Director of Pharmacy.
- Co-ordinate the production and review of pharmacy SOPs and author any relating to risk management.
- Support with the review of Clinical Guidelines, Patient Group Directions, Clinical Operating Procedures and risk assessments, when deemed appropriate. Engaging authors and specialist pharmacists to ensure all documents meet the required standards before coming to the committee.
- Take part in multidisciplinary Medicines Management walk arounds, where the postholders expertise is Pharmacy and Clinical Governance.
- Support the Associate Director of Pharmacy Governance and Deputy Director of Pharmacy to ensure our outsourced pharmacy service is compliant with governance processes and standards (local and national).
- Support the Pharmacy procurement team with medication shortages and assessing suitable alternative medicines in accordance to the Purchasing for Safety standard operating procedure.
- Work closely with the Pharmacy Education and Training Team for continuously optimising learning within the department of all staff members.
- Maintain a clinical pharmacy profile (approx. 20% of WTE).
