Job summary

**INTERNAL ONLY FOR WMAS STAFF**

Due to the increase from 12 to 24 hours a day cover an exciting opportunity has become available for Enhanced Care Emergency Medical Dispatchers to join the well established team at Millennium Point.

The successful applicants will be the first point of contact for tasking of Helicopter Emergency Medical Services (HEMS) and land based enhanced care assets. Responsible for accurate tasking of air assets & rapid response vehicles following a specific standing operating procedure

Applicants must have a good standard of general education, have experience of working in a call taking / control room environment and must be willing to complete the necessary training for the role

If this position involves a regulated activity it will require an Enhanced Disclosure & Barring Service check. The disclosure will, where appropriate to the role, include information against the Independent Safeguarding Authority barred lists for working with children, adults or both

Where a Disclosure & Barring Service (DBS) check is required for the post, all applicants are required to cover the cost of the check. The cost of £55.76 for an enhanced check is payable to our online provider at the time that the DBS application is submitted. Upon receipt of your DBS you will then be required to sign up to the DBS online update service.

Job responsibilities

Responsible for receipt and processing requests for enhanced care support from other emergency services, medical staff & other professional bodies & processing under pathways.

Responsible for tasking enhanced care assets to a range of specialist incidents including Major Incidents.

Whilst tasking is in process, identify any scene safety issues & take appropriate action in cases of entrapment, assault, chemical & industrial incidents to update responding enhanced care crews as necessary.

Process requests for Enhanced Care responses by operating the computerised assisted dispatch system (CAD) to log all relevant case notes & in the event of computer failure a manual fallback system

To work at the alternative control room as well as the existing control room in the event of computer and telephone failure.

Responsible for the receipt and processing general enquiry calls from the general public, ambulance crews, other emergency services, medical staff and other professional bodies, using set protocols and working practices. Referring non-routine enquires to the Supervisor, Press Officer, Incident Room Commander and Duty Officer.

Responsible for making outbound calls to other professional bodies and the general public adhering to working practices and protocols. These include: re-contacting 999 callers to check on a patients address and condition; contacting relatives with sensitive information; querying other professionals; alerting hospitals; and paging medics.

If necessary appear in court and give evidence about a taken 999 telephone call.

To pass information to the Trust Press Office in accordance with Trust policy and procedure..

Demonstrating own duties to visitors. Represent West Midlands Ambulance Service in exercises and demonstrations.

Participate in trials relating to the job when necessary.

Adhere to GDPR, Caldicott Guidelines, Health & Safety, Quality Management Systems and West Midlands Ambulance Service NHS code of conduct and general procedures

Identifies and reports IT related problems on computer software and workstations.

In conjunction with the aircrew, interpret aviation and meteorological information and advise control centres of the impact on HEMS operations.

Responsible for facilitating conference calls between enhanced care teams and receiving hospital units, relaying alert information from clinicians to receiving hospitals involving detailed medical handovers.

Responsible for operation and input of data onto CAD system.

Liaise with duty enhanced care teams at relevant hubs/bases regarding aircraft/vehicle and crew availability, passing that information to appropriate internal and external colleagues if applicable.

Accept flexible working practices, including flexible shift patterns and times to meet operational needs

Adherence to the code of conduct, operational instructions, quality procedures and other verbal or written instructions from West Midlands Ambulance Service University NHS Foundation Trust and charity partners.

Participate in all related training to maintain and develop skill levels and professionalism. Including attending any prescribed residential or non-residential courses for both operational necessity and career development. To keep up to date with changing procedures and protocols

Undertake other relevant duties at the direction of the Senior Operations Manager: MERIT & Enhanced Care / MERIT Team Leader/ ECT Dispatch Supervisor / Regional Trauma Desk CCPs

Update databases as required to record accurate mission data.

Ring back any cases for relevant information to support an enhanced care dispatch decision.
