Job summary
We are looking to appoint a Senior Surgical Specialty Doctor in Major Aortic Reconstructive Cardiac. The advertised post will be initially for one year with room to extend depending on progress and service requirements of the adult cardiac surgical division.
Derriford Hospital forms part of the Southwest Deanery advanced training programme in Cardiothoracic surgery. Successful graduates from the programme have gone on to international fellowships, won multiple accolades including the Parker and Edwards medals, and been successfully appointed to UK consultant posts. Consultants in the division continue to act as examiners and three are McCormack medallists. All consultants are committed and engaged with the electronic surgical curriculum. The successful candidate will benefit from all of the educational opportunities and resources afforded within the training programme including a £5000, per annum, supporting educational bursary.
The Peninsula Medical School was established in 2003, with the first graduates commenced their F1 jobs in August 2008. There are strong links to the cardiothoracic department with under-graduate teaching sessions a regular feature of the timetable.
Main duties of the job
This position is designed for a senior trainee who is likely to hold their CCT or equivalent level of clinical and surgical experience. The successful applicant will spend the year within the Aortic Surgical Service performing all aspects of open major reconstructive surgery including root, ascending and arch replacement. In addition, there is opportunity to participate in components of endovascular aortic intervention, where appropriate.
In additional to the surgical training aspects of the position, the successful candidate will be expected to organise the monthly aortovascular MDT; take specialist referrals and participate in the out of hours emergency aortic work commitment. The successful candidate is expected to function at a high clinical level at all times within the service. They will practice under supervision, or independently when clinically appropriate, and develop their surgical skills to their projected level over the duration of the post. The surgical division in Derriford is committed to the successful candidate's training, and progression, throughout their time with us and we will build on your strengths. It is anticipated that the successful applicant will be capable of independent operating and thus in a position to further enhance and develop their surgical experience into more advanced aspects of super-specialist clinical care.
