There is a maternity cover fixed term contract vacancy for 37.5 hours per week within the department. There may be a requirement to work at the weekend. A job share option is available.

We are seeking applications from enthusiastic, self-motivated Registered Dental Nurses who hold the National Certificate in Dental Nursing or NVQ Level 3 in Dental Nursing to join this busy large purpose built unit in Derriford Hospital, Plymouth. This is an ideal career opportunity for anyone who is looking for a challenging opportunity to develop their existing skills, and to provide a first class service.

Orthodontic and surgical demonstrable experience is desirable.

You will work in a friendly unit that provides oral surgery, orthodontic, and restorative dental treatment. There will be a requirement to work in the day case theatre.

Main duties of the job

The dental nurse is expected to work effectively as part of the nursing team and with other members of the multi-discipline group within Plymouth Hospitals NHS Trust to provide dental nursing care and advice for patients.

***Preference will be given to internal Trust staff, as well as 'Priority' and 'At Risk' status including NHS At Risk staff throughout Devon who are able to display recent relevant experience as dictated by the Person Specification.***

Job description

Job responsibilities

The Dental Nurse is to work alongside dental nursing colleagues to provide chair side assistance and clinical support for members of the Dental Specialties Unit, Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and Orthodontic Department.

Planning/Clinical duties will include:

  • Work within the General Dental Council scope of practice guidelines for Registered Dental Nurses.
  • Undertake the departmental induction.
  • Complete the skills based competency checklist for each of the three areas.
  • Provide dental nurse assistance to clinical staff for dental, and orthodontic procedures and assist with surgical procedures carried out in the outpatient department under local anaesthetic and theatre under general anaesthetic.
  • Provide support and assistance to the Dental Hygienist, Oral Health Educator and other dental care professionals.
  • Organise diagnostic, treatment and review clinics.
  • Be able to set up for routine procedures in specialist areas.
  • Comply with Plymouth Hospitals Trust policies and procedures to include: Infection Control, Health and Safety, Child protection, Safeguarding of Vulnerable Adults, COSHH, Resuscitation, Medicines Management and Injectable Drugs Manual Handling, Medical Devices and Complaints Handling. Theatre policies and Procedures are to be carried out whilst performing duties in theatre.
  • Follow guidelines from the Department of Health in the Health Temporary Memorandum 01-05 (HTM 01-05).
  • Comply with the Data Protection Act 1988.
  • Adopt the best practice approach for local anaesthetic procedures, to include the completion of the WHO checklist.
  • Escort patients, relatives and carers to and from the treatment room.
  • Perform diagnostic blood tests prior to or during treatment (INR, blood glucose etc.) complying with Plymouth Hospitals NHS Trust procedures and protocols. Carry out and record any routine performance checks on point of care equipment.
  • Provide support to the Head and Neck Oncology Multi-disciplinary Team Clinic.
  • Assist at the Dry Mouth and Acupuncture clinics.
  • Record, store, and dispose of clinical models in accordance with departmental guidelines after approval from the relevant Consultant and whilst complying with information governance procedures.
  • Liaise with the hospital and external laboratories to ensure the availability of laboratory and technical work for clinics.
  • Make up information packs for the clinics.
  • May be required to carry out some dental radiography. Training and a qualification in Dental Radiography will be required.
  • Provide day to day mentoring and supervision to less experienced /qualified staff.
