Job summary
This is a Deputy Consultant Clinical Scientist, Deputy Head of Histocompatibility & Immunogenetics (H&I) position requiring expert specialist theoretical and practical knowledge of all aspects of transplant immunology, H&I and management, and competence in performing all practical, administrative tasks and educational matters relevant to the H&I service offered by the laboratory.
Applicants with significant experience at band 8A or above in H&I who are in the process of completing their FRCPath will also be considered. However, applicants working towards FRCPath will be paid at Annex 21 until fully qualified. This is in line with NHS Agenda for Change terms and conditions.
To assist the Clinical Lead in provision of comprehensive Histocompatibility and Immunogenetics service to the Trust and to other users of the service.
To deputise for the Clinical Lead in providing oversight in all aspects of the Histocompatibility and Immunogenetics service.
To assist the Clinical Lead in provision of strategic direction of the H&I Laboratory, working with the Derriford Combined Lab Clinical Director and Service Line Manager for Pathology
To act as a Quality Manager for the H&I Laboratory.
Available to participate in the emergency Senior/Consultant Clinical Scientist on-call rota for the Southwest Kidney Transplant programme and National deceased HLA typing programme and to provide supervision and advice to the other members participating on the technical support on-call rota.
Main duties of the job
The post holder will ensure the timely processing of patient samples, typically 7500 a day, serving all those patients attending UHP, CCGs representing 100 General Practices and specialist assays referred from other Trusts within the Peninsula. The employs approximately120 WTE
The H&I service is part of Derriford Combined Laboratory and this speciality receives 4,000 patient requests annually, performing 6,400 tests. GP requests represent 20% of the workload.
The H&I service provides a routine service from 98am to 5.30pm Mondays to Fridays. An on-call service is available at other times in support of renal transplantation. A Consultant Clinical Scientist or senior is available at all times outside normal working hours and the post-holder would be expected to work with colleagues to provide this cover (anticipated frequency 1 in 2).
