Job summary

The purpose of this post is to develop learning opportunities by providing teaching and support for students on the Peninsula Medical School BMBS and PA Programme. The post will predominantly provide teaching and support to year 4 and 5 BMBS medical students, Year 2 PA Students. The post holder will work with the Pathway lead for General Internal Medicine Dr Roland Boey and the Clinical Liaison Team in the Medical School. It is anticipated the post holder will undertake teaching duties Monday to Wednesday and be available for clinical duties as service registrar for Thursdays and Fridays.

Main duties of the job

Teaching duties will include teaching groups of up to 5 students on clinical placements in General Internal Medicine, assessing clinical competencies, providing tutorials, delivering clinical skills teaching and developing teaching resources. Other activities related to the smooth running of the pathway weeks and placement blocks may be included. Teaching will be during academic term-time and as such, the post holder is requested to take annual leave during the medical student holidays whenever possible. medical educational and clinical teaching experience. Post holders will also be given an honorary title (honorary teaching fellow) from the University of Plymouth.

Job responsibilities

PRIMARY DUTIES & AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY

The post holder will work closely with the Medical School Pathway Lead for General Internal Medicine and the Clinical Liaison Team to deliver high quality undergraduate education to Peninsula Medical School students based in Plymouth University Hospitals NHS Trust. The main duties of the role will include:

Acting as key clinical liaison for medical students during their clinical pathway placements.

Coordinating and organising teaching for Pathway Weeks.

Liaising with the Clinical Teacher Lead and clinical teams to improve delivery of teaching.

Demonstrating and teaching practical & clinical skills within both the clinical environment and simulated teaching scenarios

Leading clinical teaching within the clinical pathway weeks and developing local departmental teaching opportunities for students.

Liaison with nurses, junior doctors, other health care providers, patients, relatives as well as senior medical staff within departments to support the successful facilitation of the BMBS programme within allocated departments.

Undertaking formal teaching both face to face and using remote platforms, when required, within the academic day programme. This could include the delivery of tutorials, lectures, Clinical Skills, and simulation sessions.

Attending ward rounds and multi-disciplinary rounds as required to support the delivery of the medical education undergraduate teaching programme.

Supporting quality assurance arrangements for clinical teaching within departments, as directed by the Pathway Lead / Hospital Sub Dean.

Attending, when required, monthly Clinical Teacher Leads Meeting and other Medical School Working Groups.

On Thursdays and Fridays, the post holder will be expected to act as Service Registrar in one of the General Internal Medicine wards.

1. Take part in departmental CPD/CME programs, to fulfil the CPD requirement for annual revalidation.

2. Opportunity to do QI/ Audits if he/she is interested.

3. Presentation of case report or research papers in international conferences if he/ she is interested to build up his CV.

4. Active participation in Departmental Senior Grand ward round to improve his/ her clinical decision-making skill with complex and complicated undifferentiated cases.

5. Able to get necessary training and preparation for MRCP- PACES exam, as some of the Consultants in GIM are the Royal College PACES examiners.
