Job summary

Applications are welcomed for the position of PCI Fellow at University Hospitals Plymouth - The South West Cardiothoracic Centre opened in November 1997. It is the tertiary referral centre for cardiothoracic services for Devon and Cornwall. This state of the art building was opened in 2007 (The Terence Lewis Building), with integrated cardiology, cardiothoracic and vascular surgery, intensive care and anaesthetic departments.

Over 118 beds are dedicated solely to the service, supporting activity of approximately 200 ablation procedures, 850 percutaneous coronary intervention cases and 1300 cardiac surgery procedures through four operating theatres, two digital flat plate catheter laboratories and a pacing lab.

There are 7 interventional cardiologists providing the PCI service, including 24/7 primary PCI. We undertake approximately 800 PCI procedures per year. The vast majority of diagnostic and interventional cardiac catheters are performed radially. Adjunctive technologies we employ include pressure wire assessment, intra-coronary imaging with IVUS and OCT, and rotational atherectomy. As a cardiothoracic centre for the region we take on complex and high risk PCI procedures. Such procedures include unprotected left main stem PCI, bifurcation PCI, graft vessel PCI and CTO PCI (both antegrade and retrograde approaches). As the interventional fellow you would be expected and encouraged to gain experience in all of these PCI opportunities.

Main duties of the job

In the 11 week cycle, the PCI Fellow will perform one week of night shifts on call split into four nights and three nights (20.00 to 08.30) and one week of late shift on call days, split into 4 and 3 long days (08.00-20.30). They will support the In-Patient Cardiology Consultation service for 1 week. They will be expected to perform 2 clinics per full week. The rest of the time will be spent in the cath lab. Weekly MDTs are available for revascularization, TAVI and endocarditis together with monthly optional meetings in ICC and PHT.

On-call commitment

Middle-grades will participate in a 1:11, full shift rota.
