This job is now closed

Job summary

The successful candidate will have experience of working within acute medicine. The post will be a fixed term contract for 12 months. Please note this vacancy is not recognised for training purposes, but the successful candidate will be given the same opportunities as the other trainees working on the Medical Rota.

Main duties of the job

An opportunity has arisen within our established acute medicine department to appoint 2 x Trust Doctors in Acute Medicine. This is an excellent opportunity to work in our 51-bedded Acute Medical Unit (AMU) and Medical Same Day Emergency Care Unit (SDEC) at University Hospitals Plymouth NHS Trust (UHP). We are a tertiary referral centre for multiple medical and surgical specialities and we are linked with a tertiary trauma centre serving the South West population. You will be joining a team of 8 Consultants, 4-5 Acute Medicine Registrars, Advanced Clinical Practitioners (ACPs), approximately 10-12 Core trainees and 6-8 Foundation trainees. We aspire to constantly improve our services and are focussed in excelling the patient journey. Our Medical SDEC is well established with acute care pathways aiming to enhance our patient care and experience. It is a fantastic time to join Acute Medicine at UHP; as part of the first phase of our New Hospital programme, we have plans for a new Urgent and Emergency Care Centre incorporating a purpose built SDEC facility on our current site in the next 2-3 years.

About us

AMU provides 51 assessment beds assessing 18,000 patients annually. We also incorporate a rapidly expanding ambulatory care unit which sees in excess of 60 patients a day. Your job would entail clinical duties in SDEC admitting patients to AMUand caring for those already in the unit.

Our services are supported by an on-site Acute GP service providing triage and clinical input. An adjacent Short Stay Ward enables rapid review and turnover of acute medical problems.

60% of our medical take is through self-referral to ED. We work closely with this department and provide consultant cover and junior support for direct Post-Take of these referrals.

You will be managerially and professionally accountable to Dr Austin Hunt Service Line Director for Acute Medicine.
