University Hospitals Plymouth NHS Trust is looking for enthusiastic and skilled Locum Interventional Consultant Cardiologist to join our innovative cardiology team. As a Locum Consultant Cardiologist at University Hospitals Plymouth, you will play a vital role in delivering top-quality cardiology services in a supportive and collaborative environment.

This position is designed to enhance the provision of secondary cardiology care, including outpatient services, to the local population in Devon and Cornwall. The job requires a basic 10 PA (Planned Activities) job plan, with potential for additional negotiations regarding specific sub-speciality interests in alignment with the strategic objectives of the Cardiology Service

The successful candidate will be expected to contribute to the Directorate's educational and audit program, including monthly CME/audit meetings and weekly teaching sessions for junior staff. University Hospital Plymouth's commitment to undergraduate teaching for both medical and dental students, including tertiary care modules in conjunction with Plymouth University, is evident in outstanding teaching facilities on-site.

Main duties of the job

The Cardiology Service will soon have three brand new fully equipped Phillips catheter laboratories (Philips Single plane Azurion 7 X-Ray Imaging systems and GE BT22 Mac-Lab Haemodynamic monitoring) two of which are co-located with the cardiothoracic theatres. A multi million pound refurbishment of the diagnostic department included creating a third on site cath lab replacing the pacing theatre allowing complex cases in all three areas. The Cardiology Outpatient Department and offers full range of standard cardiology diagnostic investigations provided by a highly experienced team of cardiac physiologists.

Derriford has been offering a 24/7 primary PCI (Percutaneous Coronary Intervention) service to the local catchment population of approximately 475,000 people since 2009 with approximately 200 PPCI procedures per year and a total PCI rate of 750 PCI per year (equivalent to 1550 per million population per year). There are facilities to perform pressure wire, Intravascular ultrasound, rotablation and OCT. We have recently established a dedicated CTO programme.

Currently seven interventional cardiologists participate in a 1:7 on call rota including one week as Cardiologist of the Week (CoW) providing daily ward rounds for ACS (Acute Coronary Syndrome) admissions and close liaison with the Acute Medical Service and other referrals (see job plan at Appendix A). This new post will decrease the on-call frequency to 1:8.
