Job summary

The Clinical Biochemistry department are looking to recruit a Clinical Scientist to join our expanding team.Applications are encouraged from HCPC Clinical Scientist registered applicants or those within their final year of STP training.

Clinical Biochemistry is part of Derriford Combined Laboratory and is made up of: Automated Biochemistry, Chemistry Special Investigations and POCT. We perform a range of specialist and manual laboratory techniques including HPLC, ICPMS and LC-MS/MS. We also have an active and growing POCT team with a view to expand and innovate further. Whilst this new post has been brought about predominantly to meet the needs of our expanding POCT service, the successful candidate will be given the opportunity to decide their area of focus. It will be a mandatory requirement for the successful candidate to participate in the DB rota.

You will be required to undertake evidence-based clinical audit and research projects and to collaborate with clinical colleagues from across the Trust including as part of MDT meetings.

As a Clinical Team we have close links with the medical school and deliver a range of teaching activities which you would have the opportunity to participate in, as well as opportunities to supervise and contribute to training of local junior Healthcare Scientist colleagues. You will be strongly encouraged to contribute and participate in CPD both locally and nationally and to pursue higher professional qualifications including FRCPath.

Main duties of the job

The post holder in collaboration with the BMS Section Leads, Laboratory Operational Manager, Principal/Senior Clinical Scientists, Consultant Chemical Pathologist and Consultant Clinical Scientists, will provide a timely, high quality, accurate and cost effective service.

The post holder will ensure the timely processing of patient samples, typically 7000-8000 a day, serving all those patients attending University Hospitals Plymouth NHS Trust (UHP), Primary Care Networks representing 100 General Practices and specialist assays referred to us from other Trusts.

The department performs 4.7 million tests annually and employs 123 WTE staff. Within the biochemistry clinical team there are currently 1 Consultant Clinical Scientist and Head of Section, 1 Chemical Pathologist, 1 Principal Clinical Scientist, 2 Senior Clinical Scientists and 1 STP trainee.

To develop and undertake competency training and assessments for the chemistry laboratory team

To undertake evidence-based clinical audits and research projects to further own and team's clinical practice. Make recommendations to clinical leads/managers of for changes to practice by the team. May lead the implementation of specific changes to practice or contribute to service protocols

  • Validate and release results from all areas of the laboratory. To instigate any necessary actions consequent on their release, e.g. discussion with clinical staff, advice, suggestions and the instigation of further investigations.
  • Provide (with others) a highly specialised advisory service in all aspects of Clinical Biochemistry to the trust, the PCT and other external bodies as appropriate
  • Provide all necessary input to the work of the department to ensure the provision of a rapid, reliable and efficient service
  • Ensure the validity of results produced within areas of activity by monitoring performance of methodologies and available quality control data, and ensuring provision of protocols for the correction of problems
  • Participate in the investigation of any erroneous or unusual patient test results

  • Assist in determining the best combination of tests included in request profiles, the method of requesting, sample handling and result reporting
