About us
The work of the department
In January 2018, we opened a dedicated orthopaedic and rheumatology outpatient department which includes a dedicated radiology department, ultrasound room, clinic rooms and bespoke 4-bay infusion units. In spring 2024, we are hoping to complete the construction of a 3-theatre orthopaedic operating suite, that will be supported by a dedicated, ring-fenced 24-bed joint replacement ward. Outpatient trauma services are due to be re-located to a new fracture clinic suite in a purpose built Urgent and Emergency Care (UEC) building in the summer of 2024.
Scope of the service
Orthopaedics provides emergency and elective inpatient, day case and outpatient services to the catchment population of the Trust, which includes Plymouth and the surrounding area, the South Hams and East Cornwall. Most outpatient services are delivered from Derriford Hospital, with outreach clinics being held in community hospitals. Complex elective operating is delivered at Derriford Hospital. Patients requiring less intensive postoperative care are treated by University Hospital's Plymouth surgeons at the Peninsula Treatment Centre. The paediatric orthopaedic team offer outreach and inreach paediatric services for North Devon and Cornwall and have been actively developing a "hub and spoke" model for the delivery of care.
