Job summary

This vacancy is based on a part or full-time orthodontic consultant of 6 - 10 PA's (24 - 40 hours).

The consultant will be part of a large, established, multidisciplinary team. They will be expected to undertake the orthodontic care of patients requiring orthognathic surgery, dentoalveolar surgery, orthodontic/restorative treatment, and complex orthodontic treatment. They will be involved in regional postgraduate training and undergraduate education with the Peninsula Dental School.

Main duties of the job

The Orthodontic Department provides outpatient services to the catchment population of University Hospitals Plymouth NHS Trust, which includes Plymouth, South Hams and East Cornwall. Orthodontic treatment is provided for both children and adults, accepting 3b cases as per the NHS National Orthodontic Commissioning Guidelines. There is a good working relationship between the team, local specialist practitioners and general practitioners. The established Devon & Cornwall Orthodontic Managed Clinical Network provides a valuable forum for communication between local providers and commissioners of orthodontic care to facilitate the provision of effective and efficient orthodontic services.

Duties of the post

The successful candidate will be expected to:

  • Provide advice to dental and medical practitioners working in primary care services.
  • Provide advice to hospital clinicians, including consultants in Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery, Restorative Dentistry and a range of medical specialties.
  • Liaise with specialist orthodontic practitioners working within the primary care sector and provide advice if requested.
  • Provide a high-quality treatment service for patients with severe or complex malocclusions.
  • Provide a high-quality treatment service for patients requiring interdisciplinary care.

On-call and cover for colleagues

The new consultant may occasionally be required to cover for absent colleagues. There is no on-call commitment.

Education and training

The successful candidate will be expected to contribute to the academic life of the department and will be involved with the training of specialist registrars in orthodontics and other junior staff. Consultants in the department contribute to regional specialist registrar training, teaching vocational dentists, and the continuing education of dentists, orthodontic therapists and dental nurses. The new consultant can expect to have an active role in training our registrars and in training other regional trainees. We have an orthodontic ST4/5 in national recruitment for November 2023 but if unsuccessful in appointing to this role we will convert this to run through training for an ST1 starting in January 2024 and allied with the Bristol Dental School. The new consultant would be a clinical supervisor for any of our trainees and other orthodontic team members.

The Peninsula Dental School (Plymouth University)

The Peninsula Dental School (PDS) opened in 2007 and it provides exciting opportunities for teaching and learning in Plymouth and the Southwest Peninsula. Undergraduates receive training in Plymouth, Exeter and Truro, but their main base is Plymouth. The new consultant can expect to have a role in teaching dental undergraduates and trainee dental therapists who attend new patient clinics in the Orthodontic Department. There will also be opportunities to deliver workshops and other teaching sessions at the Dental School. The role of dental specialty training at the Dental School is developing and there are likely to be opportunities for postgraduate orthodontic education in the future.

Clinical Governance and Research

The successful candidate will be expected to have full involvement in clinical governance, research and development in orthodontics. The department relies on successful multi-professional working. The candidate is expected to adhere to the principles of evidence-based practice and adhere to agreed national and local guidelines, protocols and pathways developed in the specialty. The candidate is expected to comply with the Trusts annual appraisal process (a condition of employment) and General Dental Council eCPD requirements.

Administration

The successful candidate will be expected to undertake all necessary administration associated with the care of their patients. Appropriate secretarial and IT support will be provided. The new consultant will share an office and will have an allocated secretary.

Management

The successful candidate will be responsible to the Clinical Service Line Director for the effective and efficient use of resources under his/her control, to contribute to the development of orthodontic services locally and regionally and to participate in departmental, directorate and Orthodontic Managed Clinical Network meetings.
