Job summary
University Hospitals Plymouth NHS Trust is the largest hospital in the Southwest peninsula and a major trauma centre, providing comprehensive secondary and tertiary healthcare.
The Emergency Department (ED) currently sees more than 100,000 patients per year. The Peninsula is a largely rural region with very few centres with a large urban population. The overall population of the region is approximately 1.67million, which can increase by an extra 1 million people in the peak holiday season.
The ED facilities currently include a 7-bay resuscitation room (with co-located CT scanner), 21 majors cubicles, a separate ambulatory majors area, a minors area, a dedicated paediatric area, 2 small theatres and a plaster room, a seminar room, break room, and offices. A £160m rebuild of the ED is planned to commence in 2023, with a scheduled opening in November 2025, as part of the Future Hospitals Programme. This will provide a state-of-the-art ED suitable for our growing population.
Our department also benefits from close links with the military, the British Antarctic Survey Medical Unit (BASMU), Devon Air Ambulance (DAAT), and the medical school. We have a strong academic department undertaking our own research and portfolio studies. We are a teaching hospital with significant input into undergraduate medical, nursing and paramedic education, along with postgraduate training at all levels.
Main duties of the job
The Emergency Department aims to support people with non-elective care needs to get the right care, in the right place and at the right time. This post will provide care for patients who attend the ED and are assessed as not needing hospital treatment but need care instead from a general practitioner. Currently over 16's only.
This is done through a process of assessment, negotiation, treatment and signposting, and through the development of new patient pathways as an alternative to hospital admission.
- Working alongside the ED Team to assign patients to one of the several parallel clinical workstreams.
- To treat non-emergency patients aiming to relieve pressure on other staff and to improve ED efficiency and patient experience.
- Support an MDT approach to urgent care to provide a better experience for the patients.
- Reduce overcrowding in the Emergency Department

Ensure that high clinical standards are maintained throughout the service.
Maintain a professional image of the organisation. Work with consultant and other clinical colleagues to improve non-elective care pathways in the Hospital.

Offers of flexible and part working will be considered.
We commit to support continuing professional development in line with standard outlined in the BMA model contract for GPs.
There is a monthly evening meeting which we promote in a positive way to share learning and developments and can be accommodated within the CPD allocation.
There is also a regular service review meeting looking at the service performance and review against operational targets.
