University Hospitals Plymouth NHS Trust

Consultant Radiologist for Specialist Cardiothoracic

Information:

This job is now closed

Job summary

An opportunity has arisen for a Consultant Radiologist to join a team of 50 radiologists to provide specialist cardiothoracic (including both respiratory and cardiac) imaging in addition to general radiology services. Additional subspecialty interests would also be welcomed, particularly PET-CT. These are additional posts commencing at a time of significant and exciting developments within the trust, to support demand created by the Targeted Lung Health Checks programme and expansion of imaging capacity through the development of a fully NHS-owned and operated Community Diagnostic Centre (CDC) in the city centre.

Derriford Hospital is a major trauma centre and most of the regional specialist units, including cardiothoracics, are located here. The trust has received significant central funding as part of the Future Hospitals Programme (FHP) to redevelop the site, with a new build opening September 2025 providing a new Emergency Department, Same Day Emergency Care, Interventional radiology suites, and emergency theatres, each area with its own dedicated imaging facilities. Central funding has also been secured for the CDC development which will encompass 2 CT, 2 MR, 2 x-ray and 4 ultrasound suites providing diagnostic services in the centre of Plymouth. This is also due to open in September 2025 and will provide dedicated consultant office and reporting space in a purpose-built city-centre environment.

Main duties of the job

Diagnostic imaging of cardiothoracic patients forms a significant proportion of specialist radiological work in Plymouth. The team provide comprehensive diagnostic radiology services to the Plymouth region, and tertiary imaging services for complex respiratory disease, lung reduction surgery, and tertiary cardiothoracic surgery.

UHP has the longest established cardiac CT service in the UK and remains one of the busiest and most demanding, delivering a service to both patients with stable and acute chest pain as well as those with established CAD and patients with GUCH. The Trust has 3 cardiac enabled scanners including one state-of-the-art scanner installed in 2021 which does most of the cardiac scans. There is an established track record of research and innovation in the department.

The posts are designed to share responsibility for provision of a comprehensive diagnostic cardiothoracic radiology service including provision of a range of cancer and non-cancer MDTs (including complex respiratory meetings, CICU lung reduction surgery, incidental findings from lung cancer screening), CT guided biopsies, 2WW lung cancer pathway reporting, specialist vetting and reporting with the existing team of specialist radiology consultants. The post-holder will be expected to share the inpatient, general, and on-call commitment equally with the existing consultants.
