Band 6 Permanent Position on Stonehouse Surgical Ward
Full Time hours (Internal Rotation)
We are proud to be offering an opportunity for a deputy ward manager to complete our existing ward team. Stonehouse Ward specialises in Colorectal, Hepatobiliary & Oesophageal-Gastric surgery. Our patient pathways are both elective and non-elective making this clinical area both exciting and varied. We have a level 1 bay where we provide enhanced care to our more acutely unwell patients.We work in collaboration with military nurses & we offer a robust education package for all new starters tailored to each individual's personal interests. Main duties of the job
To support the Ward Manager to provide Clinical Nurse Management, leadership and expertise in all aspects of service delivery within sphere of responsibility.The post holder, with support from the Ward Manager, will ensure that high standards are developed, implemented, and maintained, by ensuring clinical development of all staff within the department.To lead by example, acting as a role model to all members of the nursing team, leading care teams and creating a positive learning environment.
1. To provide clinical expertise and work as part of a multidisciplinary team.
2. Responsible for ensuring effective and appropriate educational support for all staff
3. To provide deputise and support for the Ward Manager.

PRIMARY DUTIES & AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY
Continuing responsibility for the assessment of care needs and setting standards by:
- Organising the department team to provide individualised patient care by utilising skill mix appropriately within the available resources in the absence of the Ward Manager.
- Ensuring staff work within national and locally agreed policies and procedures.
- Assisting in the compilation, implementation and evaluation of philosophies of care, ensuring support for the patient and his/her family and all staff members.
- Assisting in the implementation of policies such as Essence of Care, as per Trust/National guidelines
- Developing programmes of education for all staff and ensuring best utilisation of educational resources.
- Effecting change in order to meet changing patient need.
- Ensuring all staff are appraised annually with appropriate reviews.
Maintain a safe working environment, ensuring high standards and safe practice are
maintained by:
- Teaching staff to understand their responsibilities e.g. environmental cleanliness, maintenance and use of all equipment within clinical setting
- Monitoring incidents, accidents and complaints and participating in corrective action and the monitoring of outcomes.
- Adhering to the guidelines of the Health & Safety at Work Act.
- Utilisation of Trust Risk Assessment documentation, to ensure that Health & Safety / Clinical risk issues are identified / actioned in the ward area.
Management of the area, including the deployment and supervision of staff, to ensure
that Trust, Divisional and Directorate Policies and Procedures are carried out correctly by:
- Assisting in the planning of off-duty rotas to make effective use of staff..
- Recording and maintaining staff attendance records, managing and monitoring sickness and absenteeism in accordance with Trust Policy.
- Carrying out agreed procedures for the appraisal and counselling of staff.
- Assisting the ward Manager in the recruitment, selection and retention up to and including band 5 level.
Establish and maintain effective communication channels within and outside the
Department by:
- Leading the establishment of a teamwork philosophy, empowering others to take part in the decision making process.
- Maintain good relationships between all members of staff, thus developing professionalism through the unit.
- Ensure good communication both verbally and via formal documentation with all members of the nursing and multidisciplinary team.
- Work in partnership with the patient and family and other health care professionals in care planning.
- Accept responsibility; be aware and able to locate all policies relating to good working practice within the clinical area and able to adhere to both by self and colleagues, and to challenge staff about their location.
- Ensure carers/family and visitors are aware of policies, standards/guidelines relevant to the patients care or clinical area.
- Playing an active role in the integration of Patient and Public Involvement.
To be responsible for the continuing assessment of performance and the identification
of development needs of team members by:
- Ensuring that all new members of the team have a designated Mentor and participate in the induction and education of all new members of the team.
- Ensuring that all staff have an annual appraisal that includes a personal development plan relevant to their particular needs.
- Leading programmes to support staff in meeting PREP requirements.
- Lead the educational programme of all staff, including students. Close liaison with the Practice Development Department, offering practical and clinical guidance and attending lectures and meetings as required.
- Constantly updating ones own knowledge, recognising the importance of a critical approach to research and developments in nursing.
- Assist in the implementation of Improving Working Lives on the ward, with guidance from Human Resources and as per Trust Policy
- Work collaboratively within a multi-disciplinary team and participate in the induction of locum staff to ward policies and routine
