Job summary

Clinical Engineering has a total of 45wte staff including technical, support, administration and trainee staff. It provides a medical devices management service to UHP, 3 neighbouring PCT's, GP surgeries and other healthcare facilities on 200 sites within an area of 450 square miles. Clinical Engineering manages a database of 47,000 medical devices having a total value of over £100m. The service provides whole management of medical devices from pre-purchase assessment through safety and maintenance issues to end of life disposal and project and development work is also undertaken. A Medical Equipment Library service is also provided in Derriford Hospital.

This is an assistant role in support of various Clinical Engineering functions, performing commissioning, decommissioning, decontamination, booking in, returning and collecting equipment, Equipment Library duties, assisting Stores personnel and Technical Inspectors.

To work under supervision of the Team Leader, experienced Technical Inspectors and subject matter experts in the department, developing and evidencing relevant competencies and knowledge.

To engage with actively participate to completion in the Clinical Engineering training scheme, usually Healthcare Engineering Specialist Technician, Level 3 apprenticeship scheme and to build a portfolio of developing knowledge, experience and competencies towards fulfilling the departments work commitment and supporting evidence-based progression to Technical Inspector.

Main duties of the job

***Preference will be given to internal Trust staff, as well as 'Priority' and 'At Risk' status including NHS At Risk staff throughout Devon who are able to display recent relevant experience as dictated by the Person Specification.*** Assistant Technician Responsibilities

  • Works under supervision and as directed by Team Leader/Training Supervisor
  • Engages with the Clinical Engineering training scheme at the appropriate level when required
  • Assists with fulfilling general team workload objectives. Provides assistance to all Clinical Engineering teams.
  • Works to build up a baseline of equipment and process competencies.
Key Technical Tasks
  • Performs under close supervision, safety testing to BS EN 60601 and 62353 Safety Standards for Medical Devices and acceptance testing to Managing Medical Devices April 2015 MHRA standard.
  • Performs under close supervision diagnostic and fault finding procedures on medical equipment.
  • Performs under close supervision, calibration, quality control and functional checks, on patient critical medical equipment.
  • Works safely with potentially fatal voltages and currents when repairing medical equipment under close supervision.
  • Works safely with compressed gases when repairing medical equipment under close supervision.
  • Uses tools and equipment in the mechanical workshop safely and appropriately under close supervision.

  • Accepts requests for medical device repair and service from within and outside the Trust appropriately progressing high priority work.
  • Logs into and uses the Trusts Medical Devices Database to record all repair and service requests in accordance with Quality System.
  • Receives patients and other visitors to Clinical Engineering with due regard for their safety in potentially dangerous environment.
  • Performs corrective and planned preventative maintenance under close supervision on a range of medical devices following written instructions.
  • Performs acceptance, performance and safety checks under close supervision on new equipment following written instructions.
