Are you a dynamic, motivated, Registered Nurse with experience in the surgical field of theatres If so, the Colposcopy Service is looking for you to join our team.

The Colposcopy service is a busy well-established, Nurse Consultant lead service which is delivered within two rooms within the Lancaster Suite by a small nursing team. It provides women with diagnosis and treatment for abnormal smears and suspicious cervices or symptoms and cervical cytology. The Hysteroscopy service is also delivered from the same two clinical rooms which also is performed by nurse consultant, advanced nurse practitioner and medical consultants. Both services have been incredibly successful and expanded significantly and require more dedicated practitioners.

***Preference will be given to internal Trust staff, as well as 'Priority' and 'At Risk' status including NHS At Risk staff throughout Devon who are able to display recent relevant experience as dictated by the Person Specification.***

Main duties of the job

This is a training post, whereby a comprehensive training programme will be provided. The successful candidate to be fully supported to become an accredited colposcopist with the British Society for Colposcopy and Cervical Pathology (BSCCP) practicing within the NHS cervical screening colposcopy service.

Its is a busy department but our work is both stimulating and rewarding. At present we operate a 4 1/2 day service 8-6pm Monday to Friday and plan to extend to a 6 day service.

PRIMARY DUTIES & AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY

After successful training and competency assessment

Clinical Practice

  1. To be an accredited nurse colposcopist having completed the advanced course in colposcopy and cervical pathology BSCCP/ RCOG.
  2. Perform diagnostic and treatment procedures as appropriate, informing patients of additional investigations and follow up needs. Requesting further investigations as clinically indicated.
  3. Exercise professional judgement to manage risk appropriately, especially where there may be complex and unpredictable events and supporting teams to do likewise to ensure safety of individuals, families and carers.
  4. Assess patient suitability for procedure to be undertaken by a Nurse Colposcopist.
  5. To take responsibility for the patient undergoing colposcopic procedures, administering local anaesthetic as required via an agreed PGD or as an independent non-medical prescriber in accordance with the BSCCP and trust guidelines
  6. Ensure compliance with their respective code of professional conduct and work within their scope of practice
  7. To be responsible for recording and reporting all clinical findings, in a timely manner, including follow up, referral and pathways.
  8. Works in conjunction with the MDT to clearly define values, direction and policies impacting upon care
  9. Work in partnership with individuals, families and carers, using a range of assessment methods as appropriate
  10. Be responsible and accountable for their decisions, actions and omissions at this level of practice
  11. Utilise professional judgement and maturity, understanding when to seek help
  12. In addition to performing nurse lead colposcopy and cytology clinics to be the trained assistant for the hysteroscopy outpatient Consultant and Nurse Led clinics; to include invasive procedures such as novasure, myosure, insertion and retrieval of intrauterine devices and cytology clinics
  13. Discuss and inform patients of indication for investigation. Collaborate with the patient to obtain informed consent through discussion and informing patients of benefits, risks, possible additional procedures as appropriate.
  14. Provide counselling and advice for patients and family, informing them of findings and further investigations required.
  15. To regularly review the care pathway for outpatients ensuring that BSCCP Quality Assurance care pathway is in use and ensuring all staff are re-educated accordingly.
  16. Be professionally accountable for managing own caseload.
  17. To adopt a flexible working approach within the colposcopy / hytseroscopy unit thereby always ensuring maximum use of resources. The post holder must be able to undertake any other duties/responsibilities in accordance with the NMC and the Plymouth Hospitals NHS Trust policies, protocols and procedures.
  18. To take a lead role in maintaining and complying with BSCCP and NHSCSP guidelines, protocols and standards of care and practice throughout the colposcopy service.

Leadership and Managerial

  11. To deputise for the lead nurse to chair colposcopy multidisciplinary team meetings in the absence of clinical lead
  12. To contribute to the planning, development and improvement of the colposcopy/ hysteroscopy service
  13. To develop and update written information for patients and healthcare professional
  14. To work closely with other nurse specialists in development of practice and services
  15. Disseminate appropriate information to others within the specialty and the wider organization
  16. Enter colposcopy data onto the colposcopy database
  17. Communicate and liaise with GPs and other health teams outside of secondary care as necessary.
  18. Participate in implementing national standards and frameworks at a local level within the specialty.
