Job summary

  • To provide Clinical Nurse Management, leadership and expertise in all aspects of service delivery.
  • Work as expert clinical practitioner for the specialist needs of the patients on the ward, demonstrating a sound knowledge of issues relating to the acutely ill patient.
  • Out of hours review the staffing levels and workload in each area to ensure appropriate skill mix and staffing levels. Support the wards, where appropriate with staff from the pool ensuring that the Matron of the area has been informed.
  • The post-holder, with support from the Matron and Specialist Nurses in this area, will ensure that high standards are monitored and maintained, within the framework of Clinical Governance.
  • To lead by example, demonstrating effective role modelling to all members of the nursing team.
  • Undertake the designated responsibilities in the event of a major incident.
  • To advise on the application of the Mental Health Act and to receive section papers on behalf of the On-call Manager at night (2100-0700hrs).
  • The post-holder will be aware of budget restraints and the need to maintain financial balance.
  • Provides specialist nursing advice and psychological support to patients, carers, and health care professionals.
  • As a senior nurse contribute to service development, audit and research projects and helps develops educational packages according to need of care

Main duties of the job

  • 24 hour continuing responsibility for the provision of nursing care within the Acute Care Team.
  • Senior nurse (0355) on night duty. Providing senior clinical input. Managing and triaging workload for acute care team.
  • Responsible for the management of safe patient flows through care processes, ensuring maximum efficiencies in order for the Trust to meet the operational targets and standards.
  • Support the medical staff and nurses by filtering the ward requests and ensuring the appropriately skilled practitioner attend to the needs of the patients in a timely manner.
  • Participate in multidisciplinary handover identifying areas of concern.
  • Provide expert clinical assessment, management and monitoring of patients acutely ill and facilitate essential treatments.
  • Deliver advance clinical skills to support the care of the acutely unwell patient.

***Preference will be given to internal Trust staff, as well as 'Priority' and 'At Risk' status including NHS At Risk staff throughout Devon who are able to display recent relevant experience as dictated by the Person Specification.***

  • Manages his/her own caseload of patients whilst working as part of the Multidisciplinary team.
  • Provide guidance and support for staff in managing and caring for patients who may require a range of support with airway or/ and pain management.
  • Ensuring staff work within national and locally agreed policies and procedures.
  • Compiling, implementation and evaluation of philosophies of care, ensuring support for the patient and his/her family and all staff members.
