Job summary

The Ultrasound Department is staffed by 21 qualified Sonographers with varying skill sets and some with extended scope of practice to perform fine needle aspirations, joint injections and contrast studies. Sonographers also have non clinical roles to contribute to the service such as leading in ultrasound equipment, non ultrasound equipment, quality assurance, student mentoring etc. Additionally, we have 3 Trainee Sonographers who are training in Ultrasound.

This advertisement is for a Preceptorship Sonographer, who will be based on either 70% or 75% of Annex 21 band 7, depending on level of ultrasound experience.Candidates move on to starting point of band 7 pay scale once they have demonstrated their competencies.

The candidates must already possess a qualification in ultrasound, at undergraduate or postgraduate level.It would be desirable if the candidates can evidence recent experience of working in an Ultrasound or Imaging Department in a NHS Trust. The candidates must demonstrate preparedness to undertake the postgraduate course in Ultrasound if the candidate only possesses an undergraduate qualification.

The department will provide mentoring and/or funds for additional formal qualifications. Candidates who do not have HCPC registration will be considered if they have RCT registration. The department is committed to developing career progression for unregistered staff in areas such as education, leadership and management.

Main duties of the job

  • To be committed to ultrasound training.
  • Work towards Postgraduate Diploma in Ultrasound if candidate does not already possess this qualification.
  • Complete the preceptorship pathway.
  • When fully qualified and completed the preceptorship pathway, to provide high quality ultrasound service, performing ultrasound scans as directed.
  • To independently report examinations according to the level of reporting authorization agreed with the Consultant Sonographer and Clinical Lead in Ultrasound.

***Preference will be given to internal Trust staff, as well as 'Priority' and 'At Risk' status including NHS At Risk staff throughout Devon who are able to display recent relevant experience as dictated by the Person Specification.***

Job responsibilities

The candidate must possess ultrasound qualification, either at undergraduate or postgraduate qualification.

  • If the candidate does not yet possess a Postgraduate Diploma in Ultrasound, then they are to attend an appropriate postgraduate course. University application is a separate process with its own entry criteria. The candidate who is shortlisted for this post is must satisfy University entry on an individual basis in order to commence any training.
  • When Postgraduate qualification is obtained, formal qualifications must include abdominal and gynaecological ultrasound. Other components required may be a combination of DVT, testicular, paediatric, head and neck or musculoskeletal ultrasound, which will be determined based on service needs.

  • Sonographers who do not possess HCPC registration must be on the public voluntary register.

  • To complete preceptorship pathway, if required, as determined by Ultrasound Department upon qualification, which includes report audits and rotation in inpatient scan rooms.

  • To undertake the necessary training to remain conversant with current practice and maintaining and developing the clinical skills necessary for the role as a reporting sonographer

  • To be mindful of the needs, safety and concerns of patients; to protect their confidentiality and to adhere to the principles of informed consent.

  • Working towards carrying out ultrasound investigations and procedures safely, according to patients clinical needs and departmental practice, and to produce a report on such investigations.

  • To ensure images, reports, and other documents are stored and handled securely, patient identification and image annotation are accurate, and all necessary data entry onto electronic records is carried out properly.

  • To collaborate with all members of Ultrasound team to deliver the highest quality and standards of care.

  • To report any equipment failures or untoward occurrences to the Ultrasound team in a timely manner.

  • To work co-operatively and collaboratively within the multi-disciplinary team to ensure the highest quality patient-focused care.
