Job summary
Applications are invited for Haematology Clinical Trials Research Fellows to support the thriving research environment of the Haematology Dept at University Hospitals Plymouth NHS Trust (UHP), Devon, UK. Research is delivered in the Birch day case unit as well as being embedded in the standard clinical haematology settings at Derriford Hospital the tertiary centre for the South West Peninsula covering a catchment area in Plymouth and the surrounding districts in excess of 450,000.
These posts provide ideal opportunities for haematology specialty doctors, or as a post CCT position interested in progressing their careers through experience in haematology research & clinical trials. The unit has a particular interest in lymphoma trials with a specialist interest in mantle cell lymphoma, but we have an extensive trials portfolio covering all areas of haematology.
We are looking for 1 Clinical Trials Research Fellow ideally suited to experienced Haematology specialty trainees. The post(s) are for 24 months in general starting in August 2023 but an early start date can be negotiation and the length of the contract extended..
The post would involve provision of medical cover to a wide portfolio of clinical trials, which are run out of Birch Day case unit and inpatients on Bracken Ward. Our plans for 2023/24 are to expand our research foot across the haeamatology specialty area to broaden our research portfolio.
Main duties of the job
10 sessions / 40 hrs
7 sessions for medical support of research and admin
3 sessions clinic time in own research
This post does not require on call but we would hope that if appropriate the post-holder would have the opportunity of being part of the Trust on call rota evenings and weekends if desired.
- The post holder would be based in the Birch research office and available for advice and support to research during the 7 research sessions but when not required there would be an expectation that the post holder would use any spare capacity efficiently to expedite their own research where time allows
- 3 sessions would be embedded within the specialty service of choice and for own account research. Supervision would be from David Lewis or other named haematology consultant

In addition the post holder will also be expected to be involved in clinical and translational research as well as early phase and first in human studies in all areas of haemato-oncology and non-malignant haematology. The research work undertaken is expected to lead to a higher degree (MD or PhD).
The appointment is for 1 year in the first instance renewable for a maximum of 2 years depending on progress.

- Basic - MBBS or equivalent & Postgraduate MRCP (UK) or (I)
- Must be in a recognised, numbered SpR training post in haematology
- Non-UK graduates without MRCP must provide evidence of appropriate knowledge, training and experience, particularly in the case of acute medical conditions
Knowledge
Essential
- An understanding of haematology and relevant clinical experience including out-patient working
- Completion of at least two years training in an approved Haematology Specialist Registrar training post and have passed MRCPath Part I
- Demonstrates understanding of research, including awareness of ethical issues
- Demonstrates understanding of the basic principles of audit, clinical risk management, evidence based practice, patient safety and clinical quality improvement initiatives
Desirable
- Understanding of principles of audit, research and evidence based medicine
- Experience of clinical research including clinical trials
