An exciting opportunity has become available to join our dynamic Ophthalmology team. This is an exciting time for the department as we will be relocating to a purpose built hospital. We are looking for a positive individual who will embrace the changes and opportunities that our future holds.
To carry out the role of scrub, anaesthetic and recovery practitioner within a busy Ophthalmic Day Case Unit.
***Preference will be given to internal Trust staff, as well as 'Priority' and 'At Risk' status including NHS At Risk staff throughout Devon who are able to display recent relevant experience as dictated by the Person Specification.***

Main duties of the job
Being part of a team responsible for the perioperative care of patients during their journey through our Day Case Unit, whilst acting as their advocate. To act in the capacity of local and general anaesthetic practitioner, scrub practitioner and recovery practitioner. To supervise and teach new/junior members of staff. To mentor students.

PRIMARY DUTIES & AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY
- Provides high quality care to patients and their families during the perioperative period.
- Reporting and documenting all relevant patient needs, communicating changes to other health professionals in the multidisciplinary team.
- Act as Practitioner in charge, in the absence of the Team Leader ensuring efficient allocation of staff and resources.
- Demonstrates a commitment to evidence-based practice and clinical excellence and play an active role in the introduction of this evidence to improve patient centred care.
- To engage and interact with patients and their carers, explaining procedures and treatments to gain co-operation, understanding and allay apprehension.
- Assist with projects to develop and enhance patient care. Participate in the evaluation of patient outcomes, including audit, risk management and infection control.
- Assists in other clinical areas and speciality theatres if the clinical situation and staffing levels demand.
- Attend relevant meetings and deliver feedback.
- To develop and achieve objectives identified through continuing appraisal of job role.
- To develop appraisal skills and carry out appraisals and personal development plans for non-registered practitioners in line with Agenda for Change and the knowledge skills framework.
MANAGERIAL:
- Report and manage untoward incidents, such as clinical emergencies, injury or drug administration errors, as detailed in Trust policies and procedures.
- Demonstrating an awareness of and compliance with Health and Safety regulations/procedures that apply to staff, patients and visitors within the trust premises, reporting any deficiencies in equipment, furnishings or matters of hygiene.
- Contributing towards maintaining the set standard of clinical practice. Participating in audit and quality monitoring.
- Managing the clinical risk relating to individuals or a group of patients care, reporting issues to appropriate senior staff.
- Efficient and effective use of available resources.
- Attending team, Theatre user group, Directorate and Trust meetings as appropriate.
- In exceptional circumstances to take charge in the absence of senior staff.

- Act as a Mentor/Facilitator to students and colleagues e.g. nursing, ODP, paramedic ,NVQ trainees and medical staff, participating in Induction programmes, guiding practice and assessing competencies to further develop staff.
- To promote and enhance effective communication and working relationships to maintain a cohesive and effective team. Take an active role to cascade information in Team Brief and departmental meetings.
- Work collaboratively within the multi-disciplinary team to maintain effective communication and good team working to ensure that work is neither overlooked nor duplicated.

- The post holder will be required to move between theatres/specialities to ensure skills development and to manage shortfall in staffing or clinical risk.
