Job summary

We have an exciting opportunity for a Consultant Complex Spine Surgeon to join our team within the Neurosurgery Service at Derriford Hospital.

There is an opportunity for a substantive appointment as a consultant complex spine surgeon within the Department of Neurosurgery.

The South West Neurosurgery Centre is based at Derriford Hospital. The Unit provides a comprehensive Neurosurgical and Spinal Service to the population of Devon, Cornwall, the Isles of Scilly, and part of Somerset. The population of this area is approximately 2 million, but rises considerably during the summer months, with the influx of visitors from other parts of the U.K. and from abroad. Close links exist with the District General Hospitals situated in Truro, Barnstaple, Exeter, and Torbay. Rapid transfer of patients between outlying hospitals and Plymouth is facilitated by two helicopter air ambulances.

Main duties of the job

To provide a high standard of diagnosis and treatment to outpatients and inpatient work, in elective and emergency spinal surgery. On- call for complex spinal conditions (tumour, trauma, infection etc) 1:6 with prospective cover.

The successful candidate will be expected to contribute to the academic life of the department and the Trust and to the teaching of junior medical staff and other Trust staff. There are daily handover rounds with teaching opportunities, weekly multidisciplinary sub-specialty meetings, monthly M and M meetings with quality Improvement updates and journal club, and opportunities for regular teaching sessions of neurosurgical staff.

Peninsula Medical School

Plymouth Hospitals NHS Trust is one of the NHS partners of Plymouth University Peninsula Schools of Medicine and Dentistry (PUPSMD) and the Surgical Care Group has responsibility for part of the clinical undergraduate teaching programme. Time for teaching and preparation is arranged by mutual agreement with the clinical director within the Trusts annual job planning and appraisal process.

The successful candidate may apply for an honorary teaching or research post with PMS. The PUPSMD offers postgraduate courses for a Certificate, Diploma or MSc in Professional Studies in Health, with pathways in Education, Research and Medicine in Remote Environments.

Clinical Audit & Research

To contribute to the development of Clinical Quality Standards. Employees are required to report concerns about their own practice and that of colleagues and other professionals.

There is a monthly clinical audit meeting. The successful candidate will be expected to participate in the design and completion of audit projects leading to improvements in practice. The Unit participates in the National Registries and infection control audits. There will also be further additional management roles which benefit the department made available.

There are close links with the PUPSMD. Current opportunities for research and audit are likely to be significantly enhanced in the future.

To undertake all necessary administrative duties associated with the care of his/her patients.

Management

To be responsible to the Service Line Lead for the effective and efficient use of resources under his/her control, to contribute to the planning and development of Neurosurgery, neuro-oncology and pain services and to participate in directorate/departmental meetings.
