Job summary
We are looking for a locum SHO Doctor in Obstetrics & Gynaecology at Derriford Hospital Plymouth with an immediate start.
The successful applicant will join a team of F2 doctors and GPVTS doctors to provide a junior tier Obstetrics & Gynaecological rota.
Main duties of the job
- Supporting ward rounds with the week-on-service consultant.
- Care of ward based patients.
- Assessment of patients in Triage and on the Day assessment unit.
- Assessment of patients with Gynaecological problems in the Emergency Department
- Assisting in theatre as required.
- Communication with other health care professionals both within and outside the hospital.
- Participation in the department's academic, teaching, and clinical governance activities.

You will participate in the departmental junior out-of-hours rota and will work both weekday and weekend duties.

You will be resident in the hospital when providing out of hours duty. Working patterns are fully compliant with current European Working Time Directive and New Deal requirements.

The hospital provides services for a population of approximately 450,000 people, living in a wide geographic area within Devon and Cornwall, as well as Plymouth itself.

Obstetric and Gynaecological services are provided within the Maternity Unit at Derriford Hospital. A full range of medical and surgical services are available, and the department provides tertiary care for Urogynaecology, Gynaecological Oncology and Endometriosis. Job responsibilities
The working pattern is intended to work with the F1s and SHOs effectively rotating through 3 different teams: Gynae, Obstetrics and Cover, plus night shifts.
Cover weeks allow doctors to attend clinics and theatre. There is some requirement for ward work during these weeks, especially if there is sickness amongst junior staff, but other sessions allow opportunity for education. Leave may also be taken during these weeks. Working hours are normally 08.00 to 17.00 hrs. A rota is produced on a weekly basis, allocating each doctor to duties or educational sessions.
Nights:
At night there is one SHO on site. They are responsible for all areas along with the night consultant or fellow. Monday to Friday there will also be a registrar on site until 11pm, and from time to time there will be a ST2 on all night as well. Night shifts will be worked in stretches of 3 and 4 nights, with a total of 7 night shifts every 8 weeks.
Working hours are 19:30 to 08:30 hrs.
Weekends:
At weekends there is an F1 doctor, one SHO, a Registrar and one Consultant on call. Working hours are 08.00 to 20.00 hrs, and each SHO works one daytime weekend in every eight.
