Job summary
The successful applicant is to be recruited permanently and will support the Network Team in administering, configuring and troubleshooting the LAN, WAN and wireless technologies, as well as telephony infrastructure and more. This is achieved through planned project work and business-as-usual activities, whilst shadowing more senior colleagues and committing to self-guided learning. Existing networking demonstrable experience or a demonstrable capacity to learn quickly and pick up new skills is required to benefit from this role.
Main duties of the job
To be a lead Trainee Network Engineer in support of the Plymouth Health Community network and telephony infrastructure. Day to day duties include progressing of project work and troubleshooting of user-submitted Helpdesk tickets. The successful candidate will have excellent communication skills and represent the Trust when attending face-to-face and virtual meetings with users and other stakeholders on a variety of topics relating to network infrastructure. They will commit to their own development and be willing to carry out research to fill knowledge gaps.

- To be a Trainee Network Engineer in support of the Plymouth Health Community computer network and telephony infrastructure including:
- LAN, WLAN & WAN
- Computer network security Firewalls, encryption, and authentication
- TCP/IP including DNS and DHCP
- VPN
- To manage the Trusts Comms Rooms including:
- Access / Security
- Environment issues heat and power usage
- Panel patching standards
- Network space allocation
- Tidiness
- Disposal of redundant equipment using Trust process
- To adapt, test, repair and maintain the network infrastructure equipment ensuring that equipment operating system and software/firmware are at the correct revision level, completing Change Management Requests where necessary.
- To configure networking equipment, ensuring appropriate access control and management of the secure systems.
- To ensure Disaster Recovery documentation is up to date.
- Monitor network performance and availability.
Planning Support - Ensure that the Network Manager has the appropriate technical information to lead and represent the interests of the Network Team and the teams remit at all levels.
- To assist with strategic telecommunications projects for the research, development, and introduction of new technologies.
Communication & working relationships To communicate complex multi-stranded IT infrastructure issues to:
- Users - covers all Health Community staff and the general public
- Various staff in other NHS organisations:
- General Practitioners, Strategic Health Authority and other health organisations in South & West Devon
- Commercial IT server system Consultants, Suppliers, Installation and Maintenance Engineers.
Other - This post is part of the IM&T Network On-Call Rota which provides critical network infrastructure support out of business hours.
- The post holder is expected to work beyond normal worked hours to resolve any critical failures of the Plymouth Health Communitys telephone and computer infrastructure.
- Infrastructure upgrades often require working outside of normal working hours.
