Job summary

See what an Emergency Medicine life in the wonderful South West has to offer.... Be it the start of your Emergency Medicine Consultant career, a move in search of a better family life or one last opportunity to make the jump to the country or coast before retirement, there are countless reasons that you should consider taking a look at what Derriford Emergency Medicine could do for you.

Applications are invited to join our highly regarded team of enthusiastic and committed Emergency Medicine Consultants in Plymouth, Britain's Ocean City. We are hoping to find like-minded colleagues who are passionate about delivering high quality contemporary emergency medicine but who also welcome the quality of life benefits of practicing within easy reach of sea and moors, here in the heart of the South West.

Plymouth is a vibrant university city by the sea, set on the border of Devon and Cornwall, with an active cultural scene and amazing quality of life. Dartmoor, the South Hams and South East Cornwall are all within living distance. Schooling is excellent, with high quality primary and secondary schools (including grammar). The region offers a full range of leisure opportunities (stunning beaches, sailing, Dartmoor, wild swimming, cycling, climbing, and much much more). Road and rail links mean we aren't as far away as the rest of the UK as you would think...just far enough!

Main duties of the job

We consistently receive excellent feedback from trainees and students and want to continue to build this reputation, along with our reputation for providing high quality clinical care at the leading edge of our speciality.

The successful applicant is expected to contribute to all aspects of departmental workload, including out-of-hours work. At present, the shop-floor is covered, throughout the 24 hour day, by junior and middle grade doctors. Other than shop-floor work, there are currently consultant clinics (including a dedicated paediatric clinic), a daily CDU ward round, 10 Peninsula Medical School (PMS) shop-floor teaching sessions and variable off shop-floor PMS Sessions.

There is a dedicated 3 hour teaching session for the junior doctors every other week, (supervised/provided by a consultant). There is a monthly education / governance session.

In addition, there are a 1/2 hour musculoskeletal radiology MDTs, a 3/4 hour trauma review meeting, monthly senior teaching, liaison/educational meetings with MAU and ITU, senior medical/nursing staff meetings, monthly directorate meetings, and a bi-annual trauma MDT meeting.

At junior doctor changeover dates, there is a whole day comprehensive departmental induction course, and another whole day on musculoskeletal radiology.

The department participates in an increasing number of research projects, under the leadership of Prof Captain Jason Smith and his academic department
