Main duties of the job
To provide a high standard of diagnosis and treatment to outpatients and inpatient work, in elective and emergency neurosurgery.
The neurosurgery department provides care to adult patients with emergency and elective conditions. Since the nearest paediatric neurosurgical unit is 125 miles away, emergency care is provided to children when the on-call neurosurgeon considers expedient surgical care necessary (after discussion with the Paediatric Neurosurgeons in Bristol).
About us
The South West Neurosurgery Centre is based at Derriford Hospital. The Unit provides a comprehensive Neurosurgical Service to the population of Devon, Cornwall, the Isles of Scilly, and part of Somerset. Close links exist with the District General Hospitals situated in Truro, Barnstaple, Exeter, and Torbay. Rapid transfer of patients between outlying hospitals and Plymouth is facilitated by two helicopter air ambulances.
The Department
The Department is situated on Level 4 opposite the main theatre suite. There are 32 beds available on the South West Neurosurgery Unit (Moorgate) and in addition there is access to ICU with 14 level 3 and 10 level 2 beds across two intensive care wards of which Pencarrow (10 beds) is where patients with neurosurgically treated pathology are primarily managed but beds are managed flexibly across both clinical areas to accommodate peaks and troughs in activity. New ward expansion completion is expected Autumn 2022 and theatre expansion (from 3 theatres every day to 4) expected next year. The number of referrals to the Department continues to increase steadily, and nearly all aspects of Adult Neurosurgery are dealt with, there being very little referral to other Centres. On average, around 2000 operations are performed and almost 4000 outpatients are seen per year. There is also a stereotactic radiosurgery service.
