Job summary
An exciting opportunity has become available in our busy Hepatobiliary, Pancreatic and Sarcoma surgery unit for a period of six months from October 2022 for two candidates at registrar / Senior Clinical Fellow level for the suitable candidate. This will be a fixed term contract until 4 April 2023, but there are likely to be further opportunities to extend the post with us in HPB surgery, or possibly within another surgical subspeciality dependent on individual requirements. This is covering a vacancy within a formally recognised deanery training post. The successful candidate will be given the same training opportunities as those on a recognised training programme.
Main duties of the job
This post provides an excellent opportunity for exposure to a large number of general surgery cases as well as subspeciality practice in HPB and Sarcoma surgery. Depending on the level of experience of the candidate the role can accommodate the opportunity to be involved in major complex surgeries, but also refine technique in Laparoscopic upper GI surgery including cholecystectomy and bile duct exploration. The successful candidate will participate in the standard work of the unit, including commitment to the general surgery on call rota in line with other middle grade doctors on the general surgical unit.
About us
Derriford Hospital has been designated as the cancer centre for pancreatic malignancy in the Peninsula since April 2006 and is also designated by the Peninsula Cancer Network as the regional centre for liver resection. Derriford Hospital also provides renal transplantation services to the population of the SW peninsula.
In the last few years there has been a major reorganisation of theatre provision following the building of two new theatre complexes and improved critical care facilities. There are plans to develop the emergency department of the hospital, with the building of a new admission / assessment Hub and five new operating suites.
The work of the department
The HPB unit started doing liver surgery in 2005, to build on its established pancreatic surgical workload. The HPB service line has expanded and is now well established as a centre of excellence in the UK. Our outcomes and results compare favourably with international and national reported data. We are proud to have a team-based approach and have a cooperative way of working.
