Trust Doctors

We are looking to appoint Trust Doctors at CT1/2 Level in Trauma and Orthopaedics to start 3 August 2022 for 6 months, extendable subject to satisfactory performance to 1 August 2023.

These posts are part of the junior doctor full shift rota (weekday and weekend day oncall, night oncall and ward cover weekend shifts) and attracts appropriate payments for out of hours working. Night shifts currently include cross cover with neurosurgery under the supervision of a Neurosurgical registrar and a full induction will be provided for this.

Anatomy Demonstrators

Trust Doctors (Non-Training Grade at ST 1-2/CT 1-2 level) from 3 August 2022 for 6 months, extendable subject to satisfactory performance to 1 August 2023. These are fixed term developmental posts working with the medical school 2 out of 5 weeks during University term time and providing clinical service provision to the Trauma and Orthopaedic department at other times. This post compliments doctors working towards the MRCS Part A exam looking to pursue a career in surgery. The successful applicants will work within the core anatomy education team at the University of Plymouth providing students with support, guidance and high quality anatomy teaching and learning.

For both positions, we may be able to accommodate anyone wishing to start one or 2 months late but the posts will still end at the latest August 2023.

Main duties of the job

Clinical

  1. To provide day to day in-patient care.
  2. To carry out a daily ward round and to accompany Senior Staff ward rounds.
  3. To maintain in-patient notes, admissions, follow-up and discharges, unless already completed by Consultants.
  4. To deal with emergencies immediately they are admitted, and inform Specialist Registrar on duty.
  5. To prepare discharge notes to GPs
  6. To prepare operation lists, obtain patient's consent for surgery, mark correct limb and notify Anaesthetist. To assist Senior Staff in theatre.

Anatomy Demonstrators

The Anatomy Demonstrator(s) will primarily facilitate topographical and functional anatomy sessions, with the potential to extend into medical imaging and histology. Teaching is predominantly in small group, interactive sessions, which combine cutting-edge technology such as the Anatomage system, with topography, working with our team of model patients. Peninsula Medical School follows a constructively aligned teaching paradigm, teaching anatomy in the way doctors see it in practice. We also use a spiral curriculum to encourage deep learning of subjects, expanding on them in different contexts and further depth, through each year of the course; ensuring students are fully equipped to pursue any specialty they prefer.

The primary day to day focus of the posts will be the management of inpatients and emergency admissions within Derriford Hospital. Although these are Trust (CT1-2 level equivalent) positions appointed for service there will be opportunities for career development by taking on audits, QI projects and facilitating medical student teaching. Each candidate with be assigned an educational supervisor.

Teaching/Audit

Teaching takes place currently on Monday mornings, Thursday lunchtime and Fridays.

Research

Clinical research projects are encouraged and help will be given in choice of project and advice of its pursuit.

Anatomy Demonstrators

The primary focus is on teaching the undergraduate Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (BMBS) and postgraduate Physician Associate Studies (PgDip) courses, although there are opportunities to provide teaching to clinical and allied health profession staff within the NHS.

3 out of 5 weeks during term time and outside of term time the successful applicants will give support to the day to day running of the Trauma and Orthopaedic department and be involved in their full shift rota including day and night shifts (cross covering neurosurgery) and weekend ward cover.

Please note, as an Anatomy Demonstrator you are working approximately 40% of the time in the medical school, therefore your training opportunities within orthopaedics are in proportion with your in-hospital working time.

Research

Anatomy, Teaching and Clinical research projects are encouraged for candidates who are progressing well. Help will be given in choice of project and advice of its pursuit.

FOR BOTH ROLES

Part of the role is to cover ward duties and we have introduced 2 x 5 day week blocks of working on wards within each rota cycle (1xShaugh Ward, 1xSharp Ward) to improve continuity of care and training planning. The expectation, when possible, will be to swap these weeks with colleagues when wanting to take leave but this is not currently formally prospectively covered.

NB priority for theatre sessions is given for Deanery trainees requiring theatre exposure to meet their training requirements. All staff will however, will be asked for their particular interests and where possible, will be allocated duties accordingly, including attending theatre if appropriate.

Orthopaedic and Trauma Service

All in-patient trauma cases are admitted to Derriford Hospital. This large modern hospital has two trauma wards with 60 beds. Derriford Hospital has been nominated as a Major Trauma Centre in the South West. With sub-regional Neurosurgical, Plastic Surgical and Thoracic Units are on site, Derriford Hospital is now the preferred treatment centre for multiply injured patients in the peninsula. There is ample opportunity for the successful candidate to become involved in the management of these patients.

The Trauma Service is Consultant led and delivered. Every day commences with a Trauma Meeting where all trauma cases are discussed and plans for the day operating completed. A Hip Fracture list then commences at 08:30 and two hip fracture patients undergo surgical intervention. The trauma list then continues from 13:00 until 21:00 hours. The trauma operating lists have a dedicated consultant surgeon. The Friday and weekend lists operate from 08:30 until 17:30 hours.

The elective service is equally as busy as the trauma service and the Consultants are divided into teams. Each trust doctor will have a consultant allocated to them for the duration of the job. The consultant will guide the successful candidate to set and achieve goals during the time in the department.
