12 month fixed term contract to cover Maternity Leave for a Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeon specialising in hand and lower limb trauma reconstruction.
Main duties of the job
This post is for a Locum Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeon with an interest in hand and trauma reconstruction surgery. He /She will be responsible for the delivery and development of high-quality Plastic Surgical care including their area of expertise, which must encompass microsurgery. The post holder will also be expected to participate in the normal duties relating to the administration of the Department of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery. These duties will include teaching, continuing medical education and audit/clinical governance.
About us
The Department of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery cares for the people of Devon and Cornwall by providing a wide range of Plastic Surgery services across the two counties. As one of only two such Centres in the Peninsula, the service is responsible for a catchment of 1.2 million people. Tertiary services for the Peninsula population of 1.7 million require specialist input from Plastic Surgery.
The service at University Hospital Plymouth provides a Plastic, Reconstructive and Hand Surgery Service for both adults and children with a large proportion of activity focused on management of skin cancer, soft tissue sarcoma, breast reconstruction and hand surgery. UHP is a designated Trauma Centre and Burn Facility. The department plays an essential role in supporting a wide range of other services within UHP and from other Trusts, including Perineal Reconstruction with Colorectal Surgery and Chest wall Reconstruction with Cardiothoracic Surgery. Paediatric Urogenital reconstruction and Congenital hand Surgery services are delivered in a self-contained Paediatric Surgical Unit.

The post is advertised with 1.5 Generic SPA. The department will support additional SPA and Medical School activity in the Job Plan according to the needs of the Service. We would expect the Average full time Consultant to have 2 SPA in their Job Plan.
There is a 1 in 11.5 Trauma Rota. The working pattern is a 24 hour shift on Monday to Thursday and week end cover is from Friday 0800 hours until Monday 0800 hours with the following in hours commitments. Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays additional cover is put in place for Trauma in the afternoon to facilitate paediatric trauma, where possible.
