Consultant Ophthalmologist with a Special Interest in Glaucoma

Job summary

This is a post is for a fully accredited general ophthalmologist with recognised training in glaucoma. The department is fully electronic with Medisoft EPR and Zeiss Forum as the platform for all imaging including Zeiss OCT and Optos. Lasers include a combined YAG/SLT. Both operating theatres have ceiling mounted Zeiss microscopes. The latest surgical techniques are performed including iStent and Micropulse laser. There are opportunities to further develop further MIGS techniques. The post holder will be expected to provide clinical leadership in managing and developing services for treatment of glaucoma, including the Virtual Glaucoma Clinic. A Shared Care Glaucoma Scheme with local optometrists has been running for over 12 years and cares for more than 4000 patients.

Main duties of the job

The post is for a fully accredited general ophthalmologist with recognised training in glaucoma to complement the interests of the existing consultants. This post involves working closely with administrators, commissioners, optometrists, doctors and surgeons based at Derriford Hospital. A Job Plan review will take place within the first 6 months, and at that time further SPAs may be allocated for taking on further responsibilities such as clinical leadership in developing services for treatment of glaucoma management such as virtual eye clinics. MIGS procedures such as iStent as well as micropulse laser are already performed within the Department. There are opportunities for the further development of glaucoma therapies.

The Royal Eye Infirmary (REI) is the main ophthalmic centre for the district, with a catchment population of approximately 450,000.
