Specialist in Emergency Medicine

Sherwood Forest Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust

The closing date is 25 November 2024

Job summary

We are looking for a motivated and committed individual to join a forward-thinking organisation, which is committed to providing healthier communities and outstanding care for all. Providing outstanding care, promoting health and wellbeing whilst continuously learning and improving are just some of our strategic objectives in our five-year plan, with these in mind if you are looking for an exciting opportunity to join our friendly and supportive Emergency Department then look no further.

If successful you will be working alongside our 17 Consultants in Emergency Medicine and a strong team of Speciality Doctors and Speciality Trainees providing clinical services to the Mansfield, Ashfield, Newark, and surrounding areas in Nottinghamshire from two trust sites, King's Mill Hospital in Sutton-in-Ashfield, and Newark Hospital in Newark.

You will be fully supported in your day to day working within a team where we have a full complement of substantive Registered Nurses, Health Care Assistants and Admin and Clerical staff. We also have a highly motivated team of Advanced Clinical Practitioners and Emergency Nurse Practitioners.

We offer plenty of opportunities to become involved in teaching and audit and we have regular cohorts of medical students who require training for critical illness and musculoskeletal modules.

We also run in-house ALS/ATLS/EPLS and Ultrasound courses that attract attendees from across the region.

Main duties of the job

The over-riding purpose is to support the provision of the highest quality patient care through personal actions and continuous improvement.

Whilst on duty a doctor has clinical and professional responsibility for their patients. It is also the duty of a doctor to:

  • Keep patients (and/or their carers if appropriate) informed about their condition.
  • Involve patients (and/or their carers if appropriate) in decision making about their treatment.
  • Maintain professional standards and obligations as set out from time to time by the General Medical Council (GMC) and comply with GMC's guidance on 'Good Medical Practice' as amended or substituted from time to time.

A doctor is responsible for carrying out any work related to and reasonably incidental to the duties set out in the Job Plan such as:

  • The keeping of records and the provision of reports.
  • The proper delegation of tasks.
  • Maintaining skills and knowledge.

Doctors will be expected to be flexible and to cooperate with reasonable requests to cover for their colleagues' absence where they are safe and competent and where it is practicable to do so.

About us

You would be joining a multi award winning team (HSJ Winner for Emergency Care in 2017, 1st place Royal College of Emergency Medicine, Improvement Project of the Year 2018, HSJ Patient Safety shortlist for Best Partnership Solution for improving patient safety in 2019), who were graded as Outstanding for Leadership in the latest Care Quality Commission assessment in 2018. Consistently providing examples of best practice and excellence, the team is proud to have been featured in several NHSI and ECIST information videos. The Emergency Department performs well against the 4-hour and our Ambulance Turn Around target and is consistently within the top 20 Trust's nationally for our performance.

We are a level 2 trauma unit and actively contribute to the regional trauma network. We run a single front door model where we have 24/7 co-located primary care service, where we stream circa 20-22% of attendances from ED to primary care. We have a fully integrated frailty and discharge service at our front door, including therapy and social care.

Our new, recently built Same Day Emergency Care Unit (SDEC) running 7am - midnight 7 days a week supports the Emergency Department with several pathways supporting admission avoidance and improving flow throughout. Our highly regarded High Intensity Service User programme is led by Nurse Specialists and supported with Consultant input to work with patients who frequently attend ED with the aim in reducing the frequency they use the service.
