Consultant in Trauma & Orthopaedics Foot & Ankle

Job summary

Full time (Minimum 10 PA) Trauma and Orthopaedics Consultant Surgeon with fellowship training in Foot and Ankle surgery.

This new consultant will join a team of trauma and orthopaedic consultants providing trauma and elective orthopaedic services to Sherwood Forest Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. All trauma and emergency admissions are managed at Kings Mill Hospital site. The elective orthopaedic services are provided both at Kings Mill and Newark hospital site. Newark theatre is dedicated to elective orthopaedics and protected even during winter surge. There are already two Foot and Ankle Consultants, and this post is to cover the diabetic foot service.

Current Trauma commitment includes weekly hot day activity (Fracture clinic and Trauma theatre) with 1 in 4 weekdays on call and 1 in 16 weekend on calls, which is subject to regular review. Interest in Surgical management of Foot and Ankle Trauma is essential. Also, should be competent with general lower limb and an interest in paediatric trauma is desirable for emergency on calls.

Duties & responsibilities of the Post

1. provision with Consultant colleagues of a service to Sherwood Forest Hospitals, with responsibility for the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of illness, and the proper functioning of the department;
2. out-of-hours responsibilities, including participation in Consultant on-call rota where applicable;
3. cover for colleagues' annual leave and other authorised absences;
4. any responsibility which relates to a special interest;
5. professional supervision and management of junior medical staff;
6. responsibilities for carrying out teaching, examination and accreditation duties as required and contributing to undergraduate, postgraduate and continuing medical education activity, locally and nationally;
7. participating in medical audit;
8. managerial, including budgetary responsibilities where appropriate and compliance with standing orders and standing financial instructions of the Trust.

About us

The Department provides Orthopaedic services to King's Mill Hospital and Newark Hospital. The Trauma service is based at the Kings Mill Hospital.

The unit consists of two wards, one of these being protected for elective Orthopaedics. There is also a Day Case Unit with day case bed and overnight facility. There is a dedicated Trauma Admissions Unit on one of the trauma wards, and this enables fast tracking of selected trauma admissions such as fractured necks of femur.

We have close contacts with Physicians in the Department of Health Care of the Elderly, which enables rapid transfer of elderly patients into rehabilitation beds.

There are three dedicated Orthopaedic theatres with laminar flow at Kings Mill and one at Newark hospital. In addition one of the Day case theatre is laminar flow and for orthopaedic day case surgery. We have a full range of elective and trauma equipment.
