Job summary

We have an exciting opportunity, due to new funding, for an enthusiastic and experienced Neonatal Speech and language Therapist (SLT) to join our acute team to set up and develop the SLT service to our neonatal unit.

Direct supervision will be provided within the team, additional training will be provided as part of this role and there will be allocated time for peer supervision with other neonatal SLTs as part of the East Midlands Neonatal ODN.

The post sits within the wider Speech and Language Therapy team at Sherwood Forest Hospitals NHS Trust which provide services to Adult Critical Care, the Stroke Unit, Early Supported Discharge Team for Stroke, General Medical Wards and ENT. We are an innovative, supportive team with a strong focus on staff wellbeing.

Main duties of the job

This post will focus on establishing a service to infants and their families on the neonatal unit, working closely with the MDT to develop a plan to expand the MDT provision in the future.

You will work with in-patients on the neonatal unit. Provide regular communication and swallowing assessment and therapy. Continually represent the SLT service alongside paediatric colleagues. Be innovative in your approach to patient care and service delivery , whilst being part of the dynamic MDT developing service initiatives.

We are looking for individuals who are passionate about working in acute paediatrics and who can provide training and support to students and less experienced SLTs. Experienced in working in the acute setting, and with neonates. A skilled advocate and representative of SLT. An excellent communicator with infants and adults. Able to thrive in a busy, constantly changing and complex environment.

Qualifications

Essential

  • Recognised Speech and Language Therapy Degree Qualification or equivalent
  • Health Professions Council - Licence to Practice
  • Registered Member of Royal College of Speech and Language Therapist
  • Advanced post-graduate/accredited training in neo-natal dysphagia and/or tracheostomy for selected client groups
  • Advanced training in AAC systems for selected client groups

Desirable

  • Evidence of successful completion of specialist short courses up to Master's degree equivalent

Knowledge

Essential

  • Well established knowledge of a broad range assessment tools relevant to the specialist client group
  • In-depth knowledge of national policies and procedures (relevant to the specialist client group)
  • In depth knowledge of a range of appropriate therapeutic interventions (relevant to the client group) and an ability to compare and contrast relative benefits
  • Has in depth knowledge of clinical governance /audit and how this relates to the specialist service area.
