Sherwood Forest Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust is seeking a consultant ophthalmologist with specialist interest in oculoplastics.
We are delighted to offer this permanent post to join a team of current 8 ophthalmology consultants working both at King's Mill Hospital and Newark Hospital. This is a new post in a busy, dynamic department treating a variety of ophthalmological conditions, but the post is for a consultant with a specialist interest in oculoplastics.

The ophthalmic department is a well-equipped entity composed of separate out-patients department and integrated day-case facility and theatre block.
Main duties of the job

The over-riding purpose is to support the provision of the highest quality patient care through personal actions and continuous improvement
- Provision of a service to Sherwood Forest Hospitals in cooperation with other consultant colleagues with responsibility for the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of illness and proper functioning of the department
- Out-of-hours responsibilities, including participation in Consultant on-call rota where applicable
- Cover for colleagues' annual leave and other authorised absences
- Any responsibility which relates to a special interest
- Professional supervision and management of junior medical staff including the observance of local employment and human resource policies and procedures
- Responsibilities for carrying out teaching, examination and accreditation duties as required and contributing to undergraduate, postgraduate and continuing medical education activity, locally and nationally
- Participating in medical audit, the Trust's Clinical Governance processes and in CPD - SPA time is provided in job plans and attendance at audit and other governance meetings is mandatory
- Managerial, including budgetary responsibilities where appropriate, and compliance withstanding orders and standing financial instructions of the Trust
About us
You will join an existing team of consultants providing a comprehensive ophthalmic service to be the western part of North Nottinghamshire and in particular, the residents of Mansfield, Ashfield and Newark districts. The existing consultants are specialists in the areas of anterior segment, paediatric ophthalmology, medical retina, glaucoma and oculoplastics. You will demonstrate a wide range of skills and will be asked work flexibly within the department.
The out-patients department is well equipped with an Argon and Yag laser including SLT, fluorescein angiography, minor operating theatre, separate fully equipped rooms for consultation, competent adequate nursing support, a highly competent orthoptic department and excellent secretarial support.
General and specialised clinics are conducted by the consultants including glaucoma, medical retinal services, paediatric, oculoplastics and other specialised services such as pre-operative assessments and minor operations are carried out in theatre.
The ophthalmology ward is run by highly trained dedicated staff who also assist in the operating theatre. The operating theatre is fully equipped (Zeiss microscope; cyclodiode micropulse laser). A full general span of ophthalmology is undertaken in the department. Some specialised work is referred to an adjacent teaching hospital, mainly in Nottingham.

A formal job plan will be agreed between the appointee and their Head of Service, on behalf of the Medical Director, three months after the commencement date of the appointee. This will be signed by the Chief Executive and will be effective from the commencement date of the appointment.
The job plan will be reviewed annually following an appraisal meeting. The job plan will be a prospective agreement that sets out a consultants duties, responsibilities and objectives for the coming year. It should cover all aspects of a consultants professional practice including clinical work, teaching, research, education and managerial responsibilities. It should provide a clear schedule of commitments, both internal and external, in addition, it should include personal objectives including details of their link to wider service objectives, and details of the support required by the consultant to fulfil the job plan and the objectives.
On Call Availability
The post -holder will participate in the general ophthalmic on-call rota for out of hours emergency work, which is shared with other consultants within the department and with Chesterfield Hospital. This works out approximately at a 1 in 10 rota. The successful candidate will be required to live within 15 miles of their base hospital, or 30 minutes travelling time when on call (0.25 PA for on call).
