Job summary
An opportunity has arisenwithin the Department of Cellular Pathology for an enthusiastic, highly motivated HCPC registered Advanced/Expert Biomedical Scientist in Immunocytochemistry to join the team. The successful candidate must have completed a postgraduate qualification to M-level (e.g. MSc or Higher Specialist Diploma) or have significant Specialist experience to demonstrate competency to that level.
The primary role is to act as an advanced/expert registered Biomedical Scientist who applies and disseminates highly specialist knowledge pertaining to the immunocytochemistry service.
The overriding purpose is to deliver outstanding healthcare for our patients and communities through personal actions and continuous improvement.
The successful applicant must:
- Be HCPC registered
- Have significant experience working in a Cellular Pathology Laboratory at a Specialist BMS level in immunocytochemistry or above
Main duties of the job
The primary role is to act as an advanced/expert registered Biomedical Scientist who applies and disseminates highly specialist knowledge pertaining to the immunocytochemistry service.
It will be expected that the post holder would provide expertise in immunocytochemistry which would extend to research and development activity as appropriate.
About us
The department has sections of routine Histopathology, Non-Gynae Cytology, Andrology, Immunohistochemistry and Mortuary and has an establishment of 6 Consultant staff, 3 Speciality Doctors and 17 BMS staff supported by a small team of laboratory assistants and secretariat.
The Department has full UKAS accreditation and HCPC/IBMS training status and CPD participation is actively encouraged. The successful applicant will be contracted to work 5 out of 7 days. The payment scheme is in line with Agenda for Change terms and conditions.

The post holder will act as an advanced/expert registered Biomedical Scientist who applies and disseminates highly specialist knowledge pertaining to the immunocytochemistry service.
The post holder will also provide expert scientific, technical and clinical knowledge to aid diagnostic interpretation of cellular pathology tests, undertake highly specialised investigations involving complex methodology requiring a high degree of manual and technical skills and to lead and develop the immunocytochemistry service, supplying information, delivering training and raising awareness of the field.
- Undertake highly complex examinations of clinical specimens in accordance with laboratory policies and procedures, including interpretation of immunocytochemistry results in an effective, efficient and safe manner. (Including microtomy and microscopy of histology and non-gynae cytology)
- Undertake relevant research and development activities both internal and with other NHS and educational organisations as a significant part of the role
- Develop, evaluate and implement new equipment and procedures within immunocytochemistry ensuring cost effectiveness and meeting organisational goals.
- Provide expert advice and interpretation of immunocytochemistry investigations to all departmental staff and referral to the clinical lead for clinical advice.
- In conjunction with the management team, contribute to the overall strategic development of the service.
- Where appropriate, perform the more complex analytical work of the immunocytochemistry service.
