Job summary
An opportunity has arisen within the Department of Clinical Microbiology for an enthusiastic, highly motivated HCPC registered Biomedical Scientist to join the team.
The successful candidate must be registered with the HCPC and have experience of working within a Clinical Microbiology laboratory, however the department will consider the appointment of either a Biomedical Scientist at Band 5 with several years experience, or a Specialist Biomedical Scientist (with completed IBMS Specialist portfolio or equivalent) at Band 6.
Should an applicant be appointed at Band 5, this is a transitional post which will provide the opportunity for the staff member to progress into a Band 6 Specialist BMS position upon completion of the IBMS Specialist Portfolio.
Main duties of the job
To perform a range of bacteriological, serological and molecular specialised microbiological testing, and use interpretative skills to provide reports to clinicians that detail the causative organism(s) of infection, and interpret and report the antibiotics susceptibility results to aid patient treatment.

The Department has full UKAS accreditation , HCPC/IBMS training status and CPD participation is actively encouraged. The Department processes around 400,000 specimens a year and is in a modern laboratory that opened in 2006. The Departments equipment includes BACTEC FX, MALDI, MGIT, iQ200, VIDAS 3, GeneXpert, Cobas E801, BioFire FilmArray, Adagio, and MicroScan. The department also has 2 KingFisher Flex nucleic acid extraction platforms and 2 QuantStudio 5 thermocyclers to support the Covid-19 PCR testing being performed in-house, and is looking to expand the molecular service offered.
CliniSys WinPath is the LIMS used within the laboratory and most areas within the Trust and GP surgeries are using Sunquest ICE for test requesting.
The Department will routinely be working 07:00 until 21:00 including weekends and public holidays. The successful applicant will be contracted to work 5 out of 7 and participate in the out of hours service following a period of training and proven competency. The payment scheme is in line with Agenda for Change terms and conditions.
